My Penthouse Experience...

Have you ever wanted to run a hotel in Pattaya? I was a witness to what must be described to be every hoteliers' nightmare. It happened last weekend (I hope it was not a member of this forum). This guy had been complaining incessantly for 3 hours. And yes, I must admit I did eves drop on the conversation or, as close as I could get without being too intrusive.

Apparently, the water was too wet, the bed too large and, the Jacuzzi too bubbly etc. etc. And, so it went on intermittently and, reaching a crescendo every time a fellow guest drew near.

I was impressed at the coolness of the staff involved as no one could even seem to placate him. Finally it took a long standing customer to pick him up by the scruff of the neck and, forcefully show him the exit (something security might well have done in any other establishment much sooner). I suppose there is always one. I did hear the duty manager say to him that he must be on drugs, have some kind of €˜hidden agenda' or indeed be a very nasty person. To which, I would add, all 3 I think.

Congratulations to the Penthouse for acting in a most professional manner under very difficult and trying circumstances. Just trust he doesn't try this elsewhere as he might not come out of it so well.

I'm always surprised at the crap they take from tourists and still find the self restraint to refrain from just shooting these wankers in the face.

I've seen the same thing a hundred times all over Thailand.

But once you have crossed that point you don't stand a chance...

It's kind of fun to watch them because the Thais just stair blankly or smile and this infuriates the twats even more!

Just happened to witness a 3 hour complaint - of which a couple of not too overwhelming points were brought up.

Begs the question of did this really happen & if it did,and it was so lame, why spend 3 hrs of your life witnessing it.

I saw the exact same thing at the Dynasty Inn next to Nana Plaza recently. Guy ranting and raving about how he'd been screwed on his bill. Shouting and screaming that he'd never come back... He got tired eventually and settled his bill and huffed off!

It does happen and it happens every day many many times. Farangs just can't seem to keep their cool in this temperature!

It was 21.30 by this time, and I wanted a companion for the night, so I went into Obsessions on Soi 13/4, conveniently adjacent to the Penthouse hotel.  This is a go-go bar in the best tradition of Nana, although curiously it isn't referred to on LBG.  Actually, I am not surprised as I don't recommend it.  I felt ripped off when I left, as I did last year.  I sat down with a beer and was approached by a handful of ladies, one of whom spoke decent English.  Sadly, she wishes to remain anonymous, so I cannot post a photo, and will call her 28/05 (which is cryptic...).  After some discussion with the other girls, they all agreed that 28/05 had the largest cock.  Consequently, I expected a whopper.  It was larger than Bo's but not huge by any stretch of the imagination.  28/05 is not particularly attractive - she is in her late twenties, with a face showing traces of a severe acne problem when she was younger, but she was pleasant and, as I said, spoke decent English.  The bar fine was 600 baht (1,000 for a long time before 22.00) which I thought expensive.  And 28/05 said they often add drinks to a large bill, which she (28/05) cannot point out to the customer as she would be fired, but she said that she has often seen a customer wilt at the size of the bill and leave on his own as a consequence.  As I said above, not a bar to be recommended.

Out of respect for Titian's well written account, I didn't wish to pollute his Trip Report with my nitpicking. As this is already a promo thread disguised as a disussion on that favourite whipping boy of the forum, the Penthouse Hotel, I thought this the best place to question it.

I don't take issue with the comments about his girl's looks or the exaggeration of her cock size. This stuff happens anywhere. And the barfine of 1000 baht before 10pm & 600 after has been discussed before & the point made that it isn't out of proportion to other Pattaya venues.

The top GG GoGo's are 1200 before midnight & 800 after & have been for a long time. Obsessions is not an open beer bar or a converted shop with a fridge whacked in the back. They have 60 to 70 staff (including servers, etc) most of whom are housed & fed by the hotel.

For those who don't know, the Hotel owns a 5 story apartment block in Pattaya to accommodate their staff. Some of the top earners in the bar choose to live in their own place. Understandable given the demands on their time.

Why would such a patently absurd comment be given such prominence unless there is an agenda to damage the hotel's reputation? It is all very subtle hidden away in his opening post but the intent was clear when, not once but twice, he writes that it is a bar not to be recommended.

Here's a few points to consider - the bar has installed a computerised billing system to account for every drink ordered. This is to ensure accuracy with the bills. Essential when people are drinking for hours. They tend to forget just what they ordered. After many arguments, this docket system was introduced at great expense to stop disputes.

Now if an employee is looking for a tip, they have to ask. Because there is no way they can pad a customer's bill. And remember bill-padding is rife in Nana & Patpong where it is the management themselves behind it.

I stayed 3 weeks at the Penthouse last November & was in Obsessions most nights & never saw or heard of any arguments over bills. I don't accept that "28/05" ever said that customers often wilt at the size of their bill & consequently, leave on their own.  

Plus her comment that she would be fired for mentioning the bill padding? There is no bill padding & who exactly is going to fire her if she spoke up? Not the owner, not the management.... ummm... maybe her co-conspirator who is in on the scam? Maybe she'll fire her? What utter nonsense!!

As for telling someone that she sees the customers faces wilt, really?

What does she say exactly? "Customer look so sad. They walk out on principle." And "28/05" is able to observe all these infractions over the thumping noise & in the dark of the of a busy nightclub. Sherlock Holmes would be proud.

It is no wonder that Titian refuses to name this staff member because she could never confirm her side of the story because what she is alleged to have said, NEVER HAPPENED!!!

If Titian was truly upset with his experience in the bar, he only needs step through the door into the hotel & mention it to the owner, a perfectly reasonable chap who acts on real complaints & not on those of the many vested interests in Pattaya who viciously campaign against his hotel all the time.

I mean no offense to Titian & I understand the sacrosanct status enjoyed by Trip Report writers, but would he care to explain his real agenda here. I am confused given that he chose to stay at the Penthouse for a second visit. Was it to give his attack more credibility or did he post this story because he just had a lousy time?

Having read Titians trip report from start to finish it's obvious to me that his off hand remarks about the above mentioned bar are consistent with his whole report .

The Obsessions bar doesn't seem to have been singled out for special treatment.

In fact Titian's reports on Pattaya and Bangkok have been the most honest, literate and in my view the most realistic reports written on this forum.

He isn't answerable to Pacman or anyone on this thread or any other thread.

PS. In which case, it is outrageous that Titian should make up a fictitious account of bill-padding in the digital age of printed bills.

I read & enjoyed Titian's trip report. He is not some hotheaded young guy with an attitude.

I didn't set out to defame him but his comments on Obsessions just don't add up. I don't object to his opinion but he has used some license in his conclusions.

I don't like every place I go to either & I am not denying anyone the right to use the forum for legitimate complaints.

But no one else wants to defend the Penthouse & I am all too well aware that other bar & hotel owners try to disparage the place every chance they can.

I am not suggesting Titian is part of some grand conspiracy but on the face of it, I can understand how those connected to the Penthouse would have their suspicions.

I am sure Titian can allay their fears & perhaps elaborate on his problem with the bar. The owner would have preferred to know while he was a guest. And he could have demonstrated how bills can't be padded.

Hey Paccie, Titan sure looks like one of those chaps behing the grassy knoll.

I'm not sure why other hotels would want to disparage the Penthouse since Penthouse operates in a market niche with little competition.

I'm surprised that more hotels don't offer the Penthouse experience, the mirrors, dancing poles etc. Many guys are looking for a non-stop party and what better place to do that than the Penthouse?

First off let's be clear... Ishywishyonastar (or 'yesmylady') are writing on behalf of the Penthouse hotel. The readers of this forum know this. It hasn't fooled anyone.

Second... Titian hasn't got a 'problem' with the bar. He went in, didn't like it, came out and left. No vendetta, no hate campaign and no exaggeration or emotional rhetoric.

The owner would have preferred to know while he was a guest. And he could have demonstrated how bills can't be padded.

Thirdly... This comment shows a remarkable level of naivety. In fact, this must be a joke, right?

The specific issues of The Penthouse and The Obsessions bar can be dealt with on their own promotional threads. Please don't hijack this thread to perform your cheer leading routine for them. It's getting pretty old.

The Penthouse Hotel and Obsessions are 'supporters' of this forum and will be afforded special treatment even if some of the hackneyed approaches to the marketing campaign seem to treat us like idiots!
