  • Pattaya Free Hotel Promotion May-Oct

You want to know just how low tourism has fallen in LOS, check this April 22 article from Bangkok Post

Pattaya woos visitors with free rooms

Tourism operators in Pattaya plan to offer free hotel rooms from May 1 to Oct 31 to attract local and international tourists during the low season.

Apart from hotels, restaurants and shopping malls will also join the campaign, offering discounts up to 50%. Final details will be decided tomorrow.

The seaside resort city is facing difficult times because of the global economic recession and local political problems, said Chatchawal Supachayanont, president of the Eastern Chapter of the Thai Hotels Association (THA).

"With this campaign, we hope tourists and meeting, incentive, convention and exhibition (Mice) activities will be lured back to Pattaya again and tourism sentiment will improve as well," he said.

Mr Chatchawal said Pattaya's hotels had about 20,000 rooms and that all operators would join the promotion.

"This is the first time we have had co-operation from all parties, aiming to restore Pattaya's tourism image," he said.

"Average occupancy was not so bad at around 30-40% after the Songkran festival. But we are very concerned about reservations from overseas, which are not coming yet."

Pattaya's image took a hit just before Songkran when red-shirted protesters forced the cancellation of the Asean Summit after they stormed the meeting site, the Royal Cliff Beach Hotel.

Operators in Pattaya hope that when Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva goes abroad he will be able to explain the problems in Thailand and how the government intends to solve them, in order to restore confidence among visitors.

Hey... that's where I stayed last time I went to Pattaya... very hi so and la de da, doncha know doncha know...

The problem with Thais and their ideas of promotions is that they won't actually give anything away... even when it sows seeds for future business.

One free night means you'll have to pay for two!

There won't be any hotels giving free rooms for nothing, I'll promise you that.

The mall owners must be getting very worried by now. The avenue has been open almost 2 years and once a week another shop there closes down... The brand spanking new mall just down the road has had it's honeymoon and now it's time to count the cost of an amazingly expensive and shortsighted investment. It's beautiful, but barren!

Daves Shopping Mall is doing just fine because it sells cheap (but still over priced) tourist tat to cheap tatty tourists. The Royal Garden Plaza will survive because of it's unbeatable location but even there you pretty much have the elevators to yourself these days.

But the real profit makers were the government officials who accepted the tea money to allow these insane and badly thought through investments to go ahead in the first place. They are all in Hua Hin by now, laughing their asses off!

Pattaya knows as much about promoting tourism as I know about Phuket! Fuck all!

I thought you were the expert on Phuket ?

I think its too early to call the new Central Mall a failure, the restaurants are always full (except for the one Russian place), and the shops don't seem to be doing to badly. Plus it'll be the place to spend the day when the rains come.
The Avenue is a complete flop.

Don't know whats going on with the free hotel rooms promo, my guess is they will tie it in with an air ticket or package tour....I doubt you and I will be able to take advantage of it.
