(kahuna @ Oct. 08 2008,03:30) Fool that I am, without asking anyone here, I just booked a week at the Dawin...I think I'll cancel and go back to the DIG for now and check it out when I arrive...
Don't cancel, we are desperately awaiting a reputable review.

Somebody has to be the guinea pig.

    Cheers

OK, I'll be the guinea pig...But it will cost everyone a beer...

They booked me in a Superior room at 2100 baht...

I'll let you all know next week...

PS..On their site for each of their hotels it states:

"Room rates are no charge for children under 120 cms tall occupying the same room with parents (If no extra bed required).
Otherwise, an addtional 500 Baht will be charged for the third adult."

You may want to change back to the DIG - comment I heard last week from a board member was that its not up to much and for the difference in price with DIG - its better to pay the 300 odd baht extra and stay there. DIG currently at 2280b night.

        Cheers

bumping this thread to see if anyone has actually stayed there since simon's brief visit. does the bathroom have the handheld bidet that the DIG lacks? are the rooms more similar to the higher-priced front building at the DIG or the cheaper rear bldg? (and while i'm at it - what the hell is the difference between the front and back bldg rooms anyway? a bay window/sitting area?)

any Dawin info greatly appreciated as i arrive bkk in 11 days and have yet to book...

I stayed at Dawin for 30 days last month (yes it killed me ) Staying in a condo now which is better value for a 1 month stay.

I had a superior room on 5th floor overlooking soi 4. Nice room, modern comfortable. Only 1 armchair and a small desk chair so not great for 2 if you want to lounge around...

Sorry about the door problems..I had a great stay there and the staff were always friendly and accomodating. I knew about the 2nd joiner fee, but never used it. There is NO bidet accessory in the bathroom. The superior rooms have a bath, but I never used it as it's a little small for 2.

The room service menu is quite good and not so expensive. No breakfast included but good American b/f for 125 baht served all day. The free wi-fi is good and the room has a large safe for laptops etc...

In the course of 30 days I saw many changes/improvements...so it appears to be a work in progress still.

I enjoyed my stay there, but perhaps for a little extra the DIG may be better. I think the front rooms at DIG have a better view...that's all.

Happy to add anything else if required.

I can only echo what guydesavoy wrote. Been there the whole week..just came back last night.

It`s a good place..small, cool, modern..not pretentious but you still can meet clients, if you are there for biz, in the entrance restaurant lobby coffe-shop all-in-one and still be very decently attended. NOT to mention the free Wi-Fi at 11 Mbps..yes..11 and well received everywhere. I went to visit the Frasier Suites in Sukh. Soi 11 which are of course very nice but they have very similar decoration and ambiance for more than double the price..just to draw a comparison...

Worthy but..oopsss..maybe we have said too much good about, and there won`t be any rooms left next time I`m going there

                  Cheers

                    thanks, Looker.
i wouldn't be meeting clients there, although i look forward to being one myself on a rotating nightly basis.
as long as you guys are being so helpful -- the ibook i travel with doesn't have a wifi card, so can i plug in/hardwire via cable to the internet in the room just as i have done at the DIG?
and, why the hell didn't they add hh bidets to the bathroom! the one flaw of the DIG design and they couldn't make it right? it wouldn't cost all that much to retrofit the rooms even. maybe we should put on shit-colored shirts and start a protest.

Spot on thaibound, I have fitted a couple of douche hoses next to my toilets at home in England having purchased them in Thailand.
It was an easy peasy DIY job and the hole exercise would not have cost more than 500 Baht per unit.

Not that I shag ladyboys on home turf, it is just that my lenghty stays in Thailand have shown me the way to a cleaner bum

My iBook G4 is 5 yrs old now but it has airport...so I can go wireless. Not sure about the cable/hardwire situation, you might have to ask.

                            Most welcome.

Actually I don`t remember having seen the possibility of plugging a lap top in by using cable, but I think can`t since having a Wi-Fi network is probably cheaper for teh hotel instead of cabling all the rooms. There are two PC in the lobby for anybody who doesn`t have a lap top. Unfortunately they charge for using them.

Well..I wouldn`t mind a REAL nice ceramic bidet faucet style, as in every civilized country are, well..almost

                              (bigmick22 @ Apr. 12 2009,04:00) or get a USB wireless adapter

                              is it really that simple?
the guy at the mac store here told me it'd cost me $250usd to go wireless and for that much i'd be better off putting the $ into a new computer. but i don't want to lug an expensive new computer around thailand.
assuming it's really as simple as plug it in and get online (being a mac-man, i admit i know less than shit about real computers), i'll have to check it out when i get near mbk.
                              thanks bigmick

meantime, i'm booking the DGrande until i can take a look for myself at the Dawin. still can't figure why the deluxe room is 50% more expensive than the standard. all of that just to have a bathtub?
wheels up in 7 days and 10 hours.

USB wireless adapter about 50 bucks - unless your ibook is very old and running very old version of OS X, don't see why not

do you know what version of OS X you're running? I can't remember exactly as I'm on PC now but I think you can see from "About This Mac" on the Apple menu (apple symbol)

I wonder what kind of pup he was trying to sell you with talk of 250USD to get wireless. Having ssid that, apple are notoriously expensive for stuff like this or upgrading memory etc

Here's a sample list of wireless adapters that work with Mac OS X - http://www.welovemacs.com/usbwiad.html

Note: some wireless USB adapters don't have Mac drivers so you need to check the one you get is compatible with Mac. But they are out there
