I think a hostel is right up your alley. You can find a bunch of places at www.hostels.com starting at US $9/night for dormitory living.
I don't know about Thailand specifically, but there are many wonderfully clean, safe, and inexpensive hostels out there. They are often managed by people who have an altruistic streak, religious folks, etc.
Not sure it will work so well if you're planning on bringing LBs home though....
