I would love this as I know someone dear in KORAT. Such a branch could make it so much easier for all of us to explore the northern provinces. Anybody know what is interesting in Korat and beyond? Doesn't say when the target completion date is projected to be.

I think this is taking you more East than North but perhaps could speed up connections to the North.
This seems to be a mainly Chinese project and if they continued development in the future it would be the obvious route through Laos to China.
Existing routes go up through Khon Kaen and Udon Thani to Vientiane, Laos. It would make sense to continue the high speed this way to China.
It would connect Bangkok to Vientiane then connect with Chinese lines. Should be good for Chinese expansionist policies.
Hopefully the trains won't be sold out to Chinese tourists.
Beyond Korat to the east Isaan is at your doorstep.
Buriram City is just up the road and has many new attractions such as the International Raceway and Thunderdome Football stadium.
Maybe the high speed rail could be headed that way too.
