  • Visa scams

JUST had a call from visa international telling me that my card has been compromised in the LOS.What i understad this to mean is the cards info has been copied, by a card copying matchine attached to the outlets visa hub.The only place i used my card was when i checked into the hotel(m suites). I have called the manager mr anand to inform him of what might be going on. he will look into it.
I believe it may be a staff scam so please be carefull while checking into the hotel.from now on i will not use my card anywhere in thailand as there seems to be many scams of this nature going on.
i am lucky as no money has been taken thnaks to visa acting fast and deliting the card
    thanks visa
    cheers donnnnnnny

I'm not how credit cards are issued overseas, but in the USA all credit cards bearing the Visa logo are issued by third-parties and not by Visa USA. Therefore, if any credit card data has been compromised or stolen, the issuer (i.e. the bank or finance company that provides you with the actual line of credit) should contact you and not Visa itself. Therefore I would be highly suspicious if someone says they are representing Visa calls you about card information. The only reason Visa, the actual company, might contact you, is if data had been stolen directly from them but this would not be related to someone cloning your card.

I said it before and I will say it again.
        USE CASH FOR EVERYTHING

The only thing I use my card for is booking flights online with Thai and AirAsia.

You're both partially right. The banks supply the credit line, but I believe Visa handles all the network and authorization issues. Banks are not in the business of learning how to assess fraud in cases all over the world. Some can do it, but most lack that expertise. All they can assess is if the customer is someone whose business they'd like to take a chance on (and take a cut of the profits from that user's credit card purchases).

Visa, on the other hand, has the data on all the uses, the various places where fraud is being committed, and the data for all the different users, not just the ones who have credit from a particular bank.

So, sometimes you may interact with the bank supplying the credit line, sometimes you may interact with Visa.

Even if you use Mastercard or another brand of credit cards, you're not necessarily safer (nor necessarily at greater risk) - just be sufficiently paranoid.

          Thanks for the info!

Retired the top 12.  Need a new dirty dozen.

Update: The new list is coming together: Nong Poy, Anita, Nok, Gif, Liisa Winkler, Kay, Nina Poon.  Is it possible to find 5 more?  Until then, GGs:  Jessica Alba, Yuko Ogura, Zhang Ziyi, Maggie Q, and Gong Li.

We have said it time and time again.
They are taking the numbers and cloning the cards in Korea. DO NOT USE CREDIT CARDS IN BANGKOK except at top rated hotels and airlines.

            Buyer Beware!!!

Having a credit card number compromised doesn€™t mean right away it€™s being used by some crooks€¦ what can happen is that they have learned that a computer database somewhere that your card number was being stored in was hacked€¦ so they have good reason to believe that the card number may have falling into the wrong hands and they are canceling the number as a precaution. This actually happened to me with Master Card, they called and told me not to use my card and that a new one was on its way out to me. They would not tell me what had happened other then it had been compromised and they were still conducting an investigation.

You are correct in that Visa acts as the network, clearing, and settlement for credit card transactions for Visa-backed credit cards but remember, its the bank or financial institution that is giving you the revolving line of credit. So any authortization issues, transaction details, and personal information tied directly to the card is going to be with your bank/financial institution.
