Ignore the touts and line up for a cab same as everyone else!

If you are in a hurry and the line is long then walk to departures and grab one from there. Or walk out into the street to the main road (if you have no luggage!) and get a cab there!

Once you are in a cab stay in it till you reach your destination!

You're welcome. Cabs are safe in Thailand and it is only in tourist areas that the cabbies will try to rip you off.

At the airport you'll get a ticket, pay your dues and be on your way.

It looks like a chaotic and disorganised mess, but it's really just crowded, that's all.

Like I say - ignore ANYONE who approaches you and offers you a taxi/limo etc!

Taxis in Bangkok are metered, and 90% of them are honest and will use the meter. The other 10% will try and get you to agree to a fare and not use the meter - This happens mostly at tourist hot spots, outside Patpong, next to a big Hotel, etc...

Best advice is don't use a taxi that is parked and waiting for you, you one thats cruising (unless it is a legit taxi stand).

Doesn't sound like you will have much time in Bangkok, but the Sky Train and Subway are the best ways to avoid the traffic, which is bad to horrible.

                    Hello David123au,

When you come out of customs (layout is the same in both terminals) turn Left and head towards the crowd waiting at the barrier.
(Change your money for the taxi at any bank on your left - the rate is better than outside Thailand and only slightly worse than downtown Bangkok).

When you get to the crowd at the end lots of taxi touts will offer you taxis to the city. I just steamroller through them! (Smiling politely of course    )
A few yards further - on your right is the exit door - as you walk out the door turn right.  About 15 yards (metres) away you will see a small orange booth.  This is the official taxi stand.

If you are lucky there will be only a few people waiting. Sometimes there can be 50-70! Join the queue.
At the booth just say the hotel name - their English is not good but they seem to know the name of everything in Bangkok!
They write you out a ticket and one of the wating taxi drivers will take part of it and hustle you to his cab. As Stogie says it all seems a bit chaotic but it works very well.

Metered taxi fare to the top of Sukumwit (Nana) is about 120-140 Baht depending on the traffic.

Taking the expressway is the best option takes about 20-25 minutes as opposed to 30-45-60 minutes.  When you get in the taxi say to the driver  -  'expressway khrap' (pronunced  crap!).
This will cost 60 or 70 Baht depending on which way he goes.  You have to pay this on top of the fare.

There is an airport taxi charge of 50 Baht.  It is clearly shown on the signs but you may well miss it as the signs are not good.  It is also mentioned on the ticket slip that you get from the booth.
You have to pay this to the driver when you pay the fare

Total to Nana comes to about 240-260 Baht (AU$9.0).  The touts will charge 500 but they will normally pay the expressway tolls.
I would normally give about a 30 Baht tip.

These are the cheapest taxi fares I know.   The Thai's don't tip taxi drivers by the way

                    RR.

Not a bad idea to chat a bit with guys who look like punters at the baggage carousel or on the plane. Could turn out they're going to the same place as you and you can split the fare.

Another option if you are travelling light (this time it sounds like your going for 2 nights) with little luggage and you have a bit of time to spare - you can take the Airport Bus. It runs about every 15-20 min. during peak time. Route A3 goes along Sukhumvit Road. Price is 100 Baht.

The ticket booth is near the public taxi stand, just about 15 meters or so away. Just tell the ladies at the ticket booth and they will tell you which route, if you are staying at a non-Sukhumvit Hotel.

The bus stops are not always in front of your hotel, but if it is near Nana Plaza the walk is not too far. Only ok if you have little luggage!

I always go up the stairs (2 flights) to departures, usually I in a cab within 5 minutes and you don't pay the 50baht airport pickup surcharge like you do if you get a cab from outside arrivals.

Is there any need to have bhat ready before taking off from your home country? If so, how much?
