What are some experiences with renting a cell phone for a month in Pattaya? How much? What's the range, etc.?

Take your own and buy a Thai sim card. Much easier.

tdpers, if you are coming from North America you would need a triband phone to use a Thai sim card. Most North American phones are non-GSM.

The other option is to buy a used cell phone for a few hundred baht (MBK has a number of used cell phone shops) and buy a Thai sim card to use in it. Should only set you back another couple of hundred Baht depending on the provider.

I got avery low end used phone for 1000 baht at the Com Center on Pattaya Tai.
You can also get them at Big C but Com Center seemed to offer better value. The guy or gal who sells you the phone will unlock it and put in the Sim card. You're good to go in a few minutes.

The Sim cards expire so you'll probably have to buy a new one on the next trip but they're only about 300 baht.
