wish to see the LB's in chang mai but afterwords would like to go to udon thani, especially by train, want to avoid the planes if possible, if one of you world travelers can give me an idea on how to do this it would be appreciated

While not impossible, not easy.
On trains and planes, took the plane from BKK to Chiang Mai and on the return the train south almost all the way to Bangkok to get to Kanchanaburi which is near Burma. The second class train fare was around 800 baht with a sleeper compartment. Thought it would be cool to be in their with my teerak but it was too cramped. If there's a plane from Chiang Mai to Udon Thani, I'd take it.
