  • Atm machines eating your card

My otherwise pleasent trip to Pattaya this weekend was spoiled by an ATM machine that ate my card saturday morning. A call to the phone number listed on the machine put me in touch with an operator who said I would have to go to the bank monday and I was shit out of luck till then. Repeated attempts to explain that I only had 500 Baht and needed the card now went no where.

Monday I showed up at the bank and they immediatley started giving me the runaround, manager not here come back, what branch, you sure its our bank, etc... for 30 minutes

After that they produced my card and asked is this yours and then make me sign a book and handed it back to me.

Crazy thing is they had my card the whole damn time and they just wasted 30 minutes needlessly, I still don't know why.

A few rules for this situation
    1) Always have 2 atm cards or a backup system if one gets eaten
    2) Don't use RED ATM manchines (this was Siam City Bank). Only use BLUE ATM machines. Sounds silly but in 3 years, I have only had problems with RED ATM machines.
    3) Be the loud Farang. If you are nice and quiet and accept their excuses they will give you the run around and you'll never get your card.
    4) If they tell you they cannot give you your card, or that it is automatically cancelled tell them you know that is bullshit (it is).

ps. Luckily I had another ATM card in my wallet and that worked after I went to a different machine.

    X'cuz the question..
Was the card issued by a Thai bank or was it a VISA? I'm not that familiar with the ATM system in Thailand.
Can cards issued by different banks be used at the same ATM machines?
Do only what you think it's good for you, and not what others think should be good for you!

this was an American issued ATM card, Thai ATM Machines are hooked up to the global ATM networks, so almost any USA or European ATM Card will work. ( Japanese ATM cards are a different story - they have their own wierd network ).
