Information about Issan

When trying to organize my trip to Burma I got the information about new regulations there. I have been told that now it is only possible to enter and leave the country through Yangon airport. If this turns out to be correct then I will change my travel-plans and do more Thailand instead.
In this case I want to explore Issan,e.g. Khon Kaen etc.
I am sure that some of you guys have great experience in this area and I will be grateful for any information about hotels, ladyboy hangouts a.s.o.
