Got $1400 round trip to BKK out of San Francisco with 2 weeks notice. Flying in mid March. Looked for similar trips in April and they are hundreds less. I think March is a popular travel time for students on quarter break.

It's not so much of a problem for european punters, even in January it was possible to find flights just north of £500.00 (round trip) to Bangkok via one of these oil rich middle eastern carriers.
About the same cost as it was 20 years ago

I have been checking for June from Dallas. The average has been about $1800.00 . The first time I went back in 2009 it was $1500.00 and the cheapest of my 4 trips was $1250.00. I never knew it was so expensive to be a monger.

I have been looking to book ticket from San Francisco to BKK in July for a while now. The best price I can find over the last month is $1500 USD. In years past it would be $1000-1200. Well, it is the cost of doing "business" as they say. No way around it.
What are you going to do? Sit around and bitch about it and not go or pay the extra fees and conduct life as normal?
Needless to say, the trip is booked and no complaints. I would rather pay the extra $300+ to get to LOS than to sit on my ass here thinking about how much I saved by NOT going. It's a no brainer. Just have to pay it and enjoy.

Try routes that change in Narita. Since the earthquake airlines are struggling to fill seats on flights to and from Japan. I recently purchased a return flight (Canada-BKK) for under $1,000 all in. I was able to get the same fare again for travel May 29 to June 17. Both trips have flight changes in Tokyo.

I just booked EVA from LAX to BKK for the end of this month for 1202 USD...I had to give up 12k air miles to get that price...But I was gonna lose a bunch of miles the end of the year anyway...My last two trips were only 900 USD though...

So if you have some miles, use them...I gave 100k miles to my daughter to get a "free" ticket...Not really free...Think she will have to pay taxes of around 300 USD...

My EVA Flights all have surcharges lumped on around 10% post October.

cheap flights advertised usually have big catches, like i tried to get a £29.95 flight to Prague that was advertised only to find that its on Feb 14th at 3 am 2012. The real fare return on Easyjet is £200 return for June15th... big difference

In the EU its worse as most of the fuel surcharge goes to the Govts ijn tax
