    Ignorance over knowledge
"Old communists know that when it comes to revolution, ignorance is much more powerful than knowledge," Therdpoum said.

This is the part that worries me.  The state of education in much of Thailand contributes to the ignorance of general population.
It's helped the ruling elite to keep a grip on things up to now but ultimately it could backfire on them.
Sounds a lot like the "Teabaggers" in a country far far away.

    • So much for 'peaceful protest'. In and amongst the damage to Central World and the other 30 odd locations here's a soldier who was hit my fragments from an M-79 grenade. Quite large seizures of arms and ammo have been made.

My only problem with that is that the annual murder rate in the USA is way above that of all the other developed countries in the world.

Being polite seems to have an unduly high price.

What was their point of burning down Central World? I can see their point in attacking Government buildings... but a public Shopping Mall? ... Did they ever think of all the jobs people 'had' who worked at Central World? Now 1000 people are out of work thanks to these thugs.

Don't forget: there was already a list of buildings to target.

Exactly. Those cities and locations with the strictest gun laws, have the most gun related crime. That is what statistically gives the entire country a high murder rate.

The most likely explanation for this is that areas that had a high violent crime rate were most likely to enact tough gun control legislation in an attempt to get the problem under control.

                            • Right. And it does not work, does it? The criminals still got guns and it is harder for the law abiding folks who just want to protect themselves and their homes to be able to do so.

                              • Hi y'all,

Just back online after a couple of very quiet says on Sai Noi beach south of HH with Mrs F and the folks from home.
Had the feet and toes done by the local old dear and asked how things are: she told me that tourists are non-existant in HH but a few are around in Kao Takiab (3k's south of HH). Like most beach vendors she is an old Isaan matron, very distubed by recent events. Particularly that it was international headline news for so much of last week. She felt it bought the Kingdom shame.
Other than that, yes feeling a little better about buying a house here now, but not expecting the market for Falang houses to appreciate for around 3 years due to the combination of good time building booms leaving a glut from 2006-07 and the fact that international tourist confidence will remain low regarding LOS for a while to come. Thailand will need a couple of trouble free years now. After the Suvanabhumi and ASEAN Pattaya debacles followed by the atrocities of the last 2 months its not going to bounce back as a prime destination anytime soon to those who dont know or who have not visited Thailand previously. And can you blame a family that had no experience of the gentle and kind nature of Thais in general if all they knew came from the 6 o'clock news?
What a pity for the Kingdom and the day workers who exist on tourism hand to mouth, like my little old lady on the beach.
