  • Assuming the Reds held the balance of power, would a weak coalition allow Thaksin to return? Is this his path to redemption or would he still be arrested on sight?

If he isn't pulling the strings of the Red's campaign, any suggestions who is?

Why wouldn't the guys behind the Reds arrange for the shooting of a few of their guys in order to foment sympathy for the Reds?

That's exactly what the Muslims did in Sarejevo when they needed to win UN support. It's an old tactic but it's a good tactic.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

    • Snick is right about the mystery "men in black".

Here is a photo that Manarak posted. It seems to be a still video capture of one of rogue General Khattiya's "ronin warriors".

That is no regular automatic rifle he's carrying.

      • It does seem that there is little will on any side to pursue further violence/military intervention. There appears to be a lot happenening behind the scenes to move towards some kind of political settlement.

Of course, who knows how long that would hold...

        • Wikipedia is your friend. It's an AK-47 non-standard to Thai military who use the American M-16.

            • Thats not a sniper rifle.
Could not have been an AK47, or the Thai Army's M-16

From what I am reading the 8 were killed by shots from an elevated position, many with head shots, one shot per target, also the firing appears to have been rapid (i.e. not a single shot rifle).
That requires a lot of training, not regular Thai army kind of stuff.
I have my suspicions about who could be behind it, but nothing I want to say in a public forum.

                  • I have been in LOS during previous coups & found that what was happening on the ground didn't effect my holiday at all.

Everyone still went about their business, shops, bars, restaurants opened, life went on.

However, before you leave on April 20th, check the Travel Warnings on the US Government website.

Plus continue to keep an eye on developments & don't decide until the day before departure.

Personally I would go, but what happens in the days leading up to the 20th are critical.

If nothing escalates, go, but if 1000's of Red Shirts turn up in Bangkok looking for trouble, then no one will blame you for cancelling.

I know some are saying this is worse than before but I would be interested in hearing from those in Pattaya as to what the mood is like.

We only see the worst excesses on TV, it would be too boring to report that life in Pattaya was still the same. As I suspect it is.

                      • The Geuss Bar? No idea. Is it a new ladyboy bar like the Guess Bar?

Don't forget there are about 5 Somboon restaurants, the best chain of seafood restaurants it has ever been my pleasure to eat at anywhere.

I hope they open one in Pattaya, then my life would be complete.

Pad Pak Poo... it tastes far better than it sounds...
