Thai Tourism Stats

Came across an interesting site that has lots of interesting tourism stats broken down by nationality and sex.

For example, seems that Russians aren't big sex tourists since not that many more men than women come to the LOS.

I love statistics. They can turn up so many surprises.

e.g. The numbers of Thais visiting their nearest neighbours - Malaysia 1.135 million, the most popular destination, next at 600,000 is Laos. Then China 410K leaving only Myanmar & Cambodia.

Based on those numbers I imagine 3 to 400,000 visiting each country. Maybe more for Cambodia.

Wrong, Cambodia had 10% of my guess at 35,796 as did Myanmar at only 33,048.

It seems that Laos is nearly 20 times more popular. Who knew?

And the numbers visiting Laos are up from 391,000 in the previous period!

Have the drug smugglers found a safer route via Laos? Maybe the border crossing from Myanmar is too closely checked?

Or maybe the lawless state of Laos holds too much profit potential?

Or it is none of the above. But 35K versus 600K does seem odd.

I remember an old soldier telling me a story of how he was ordered to take a count of the surviving number in his unit & report back to his CO with the list of troops broken down by age & sex.

After a few hours he returned to the CO who looked at him & said "Well....   "

ummmm.... yes and no.

The reason behind this is that russians don't like screwing asians much, plus very few russians speak english.
This also explains the presence of russian hookers in Thailand.
So you will see many older russian men bringing young prostitutes with them to Thailand.

So if the definition of a sex tourist is "going to a destination to consume sex that is on local offer", russians are indeed not sex tourists.

If the definition of a sex tourist is "going to a destination to screw one's brains out", then I would challenge your initial statement.
When I stayed at rabbit resort, there was one of those middle-aged, squarefaced, thick-bodied, tanned, gold necklace and oversized watch wearing russians in another bungalow with 3 russian girls which were much much younger than him...

When I see some relaxed russians in Thailand, I like to strike a conversation with them, it is usually very funny as they are very relaxed and don't give a shit. Even more funnier when I direct the conversations onto the topic of ladyboys. good laughs!

What is a conversation like with a 'stressed' Russian ?  

Interesting point there manarak. But I guess the conventional definition of a sex tourist is one looking for local tottie   as opposed to the BYO variety

a stressed russian is often an aggressive russian if you are not his friend. plus their general attitude and speak mkaes them look much more aggressive than they really are...
they can be a bit frightening.

I tend to avoid stressed Russains as a general rule.

Especially in Pattaya
