  • Cheap tickets from Melbourne

For the lads from Melbourne, Emirates now fly Melbourne to KL,
in direct  competition with Malaysian airlines.

As a result you can book tickets online thru either airlines website at good prices.

Malaysian has return for as low as $571 (20kg luggage limit)
Emirates is $594 return (30 kg luggage limit)

Then jump on air asia  to fantasy land

    Hi Azza,

Have just booked some flights on Thai Airways (Melbourne to Bangkok)  for later this month, however will take a look at the Emirates option in the future.

To be honest, I often check out various 'cheap' fares via Kuala Lumpar or Singapore on offer, but then end up paying a few dollars more and getting a direct flight on Thai Airways.

The airport stop overs, particularly when you have to sit around an airport for many hours are a real turn off.

By the time you add the cost of the connecting flights (KL to Bangkok) and taxes and manage to locate 'cheap' seats on the days you want to travel, I tend to question if it's really worth it.

In any case, nice to know there are some options out there.

    Cheers

I hear your point...and sometimes the waiting can be annoying.
However KL gives you a choice to fly to Chang Mai, BKK, Phuket, and Krabi.

Actually i don't like Thai airways on the melb-bkk leg, i think the service is poor
and there are too many aussie pigs on the flights.
I found the Thai service on other legs far better.

Now here is a helping hand for anyone doing the cheap charlie option.

If you are on the overnight flight on air-asia to KL from Melbourne

      - heading to Phuket, switch to Malaysian airlines at KL for the best connection by far.
      - heading to Bangkok, air asia is fine as well, but an earlier flight again using Malaysian is a better option.

Take a laptop and utilise the free net service at both KLIA or LCC terminals to pass the time.

Just had a look at the Emirates site. The tix need to be booked by the 15th of this month.

Also, if flying through KL wouldn't you need to go to the other airport (LCC) to get the connecting flight with Air Asia?

There is a bus service between the terminals - cost is about 70c AUD, 2 MYR i think from memory.

Malaysian airlines has many good deals from time to time as well - not air asia pricing but for example i picked up KL to BKK for 213 MYR ($70 AUD) one way and that was for peak season travel in December this year.

            About LCC:

"LCCT is located on the opposite side of the apron from the Main Terminal Building, near the air cargo area. By road, LCCT is about 20 km from the Main Terminal Building."

I'd be interested to know how much a cab fare is between the two terminals as Malay cab drivers don't like putting the meter on (well they didn't for me) and the public transport options weren't to flash either.

I flew Air Asia last time I went over to LOS and it took an hour by bus to get to KL and this was a non-stop trip using the highway.

Ok. I was not aware of that bus as I didn't have to use it.

If that's the case then it sounds like a really good deal.

As a fellow Melbournian nothing depresses me more than to jump on a plane at Tulla and four hours later you are still over Australian soil. the idea of going via KL Singapore or any where else does not grab me at all!!I like being picked up at BKK aiport by Mr Toom MrT or Cat about 10pm and two hours later one is in Patts and after a quick APC one can hit the town and find a friend Too easy!!

Having done about 10 trips on Thai in the last 12 months, I always found the service to be fine, no pigs...in fact the plane was half empty 9 times out of 10. So i always got 3 seats to meself...anywhere I wanted...

                    Price-wise i paid anywhere from $700 to $1100.

Yeah last 12 months has been a bargain time due to GFC... no sure how long they will last.. even air asia is getting relatively expensive.

Cheapest return fare to phuket i picked up was $230 AUD including all taxed via KL on air asia.

BTW... when the plane is half empty service is fine... its when they are full Thai really struggle.
