My own belief is that there is hardly anyone whose sexual life, if it were broadcast, would not fill the world at large with surprise and horror.  ~W. Somerset Maugham

You know, the backpack trippers who favor Phi Phi make a big deal how they had volunteered and rebuilt the place after the tsunami (violating lots of Thai labor laws). Yeah, they rebuilt it into the same congested dump it had become when the tsunami hit. It's a shame they were allowed to do this. This place should be a nature preserve. One of the most gorgeous places on the planet.

(manarak @ May 14 2009,21:59) One Thai told me that many people in the south have "black hearts". Then he added "not buddhists, you know".
Racism is alive and well.    Well, actually not racism, maybe it is regional bias. Most Thai people from the northeast have never been south of Bangkok (and if they have, it is 99% to Phuket). And most Thai people who live in the south have not been to Isaan. These two groups of people have all kinds of uninformed opinions about the other.

I have spent a LOT of time in the south, and it is my experience that most Thai Muslims are genuine and pleasant. They are Thai. Go to a town in the south (not Phuket or PhiPhi) and forget your phone on a restaurant table, a Thai Muslim will come running after you to give it back. I know, it happens in the northeast too.

What I'm saying is that it is not accurate to paint Thai Muslims in a negative light because of a view of some ignorant Issan person. Phuket is a tourist city, and like most tourist city, the locals have become jaded. Phuket, Pattaya, Phi Phi and even Chang Mai to some extent are the same in this respect. Saying Phuket=Thai Muslim so Thai Muslim=Black Heart is ignorant.  It would be like saying PattayaBahtBusDrivers=Buddist so Buddist=asshole.

I prefer the south to the northeast.

By the way, Cha Cha at Tootsie is Thai Muslim. And as far as Thai Muslims - their culture is nothing like Arab Muslims.

This is 100% true! Going there now and having been there before the tsumani, you can see that nothing positive was done to the place.

If you are looking for the next "Koh Phi Phi", be careful what you wish for.

The south of Thailand is shit compared to the rest. Fucking Muslims are miserable cunts who just seem to want to bring everyone down with them.

I don't think Phi Phi or Phuket are consistent with that generalization but anyone who has been to the rural south will tell you that what the Thais say about these wet blankets is true. They are not happy people.

Even Kui (who I never heard say anything bad about anyone) said that they were "Muslim... NOT Thai!"

Been there... never again. A desperately depressing shit hole.

(JaiDee @ May 12 2009,23:09) ....  could be food poisoning,
Getting killed from food poisoning is not that un common
. The figures are surprisingly high

I was pretty close to getting measured up for a pine box around 10 years ago when i tucked into a grilled Sea Bass in Pattaya that must have been dredged out of a toxic waste pipe..

In fact i had to crawl to the chemist on all fours almost. people must have thought i was some drunk recovering from the night before. Thank god for imodium ( and whatever else i had to take , cant remember now)

                            from phuketgazette:

                            Friday, May 15, 2009

German, 57, dies in Phuket after severe vomiting

PATONG, PHUKET: A 57-year-old German national died on the way to a Phuket hospital in the early hours of May 12 with symptoms similar to those of two tourists who recently died on Phi Phi Island in Krabi.

The deceased, later identified as Ernst Hermannweid, had been staying at the Sky Inn Hotel in Patong.

Mr Hermannweid had gone for a few drinks at a bar in Patong when he complained of feeling unwell.

He returned to his hotel, where he started vomiting violently.

He was taken by a female companion to Patong Hospital, where he was reported as dead on arrival.

Extensive efforts to resuscitate him failed.

The nurse on duty at the time told the Gazette, €œWe tried to help him but he had passed away before he arrived at the hospital and the body was already turning blue.€

€œWe are now waiting for his relatives in Germany to confirm whether they would like us to perform an autopsy,€ she added.

A source at the hospital said the course of Mr Hermannweid€™s rapid demise was consistent with infection by the Eltor-Okawa cholera bacterium that also causes severe diarrhea. However, the source warned that it was impossible to know for sure without a full autopsy.

Mr Hermanweid was employed as a project manager by the M+W Zander consulting company, working in Malaysia and Singapore.

The company has sent a representative to Phuket and they are still waiting for a report.

The German Embassy is now working to contact Mr Hermannweid's family back in Germany.

                            ewwww, cholera ??

If you're still interested the obduction report came out a couple of days ago. It's inconclusive

The Norwegian police are considering to do an obduction in Norway.
