Surat Thani?

I was thinking of taking a quick trip to Surat Thani from Bangkok.  Has anyone taken this trip?  How is the airport in Surat Thani?  What about hotels?  I am not looking for LB action just visiting a friend.  I was thinking of using Air Asia for the flight.

as far as i know,its an airforce base,but i think still does do commercial passengers service.very small place single runway,along the samelines as utapao ,if your familier with that airport,much else i dont know,but id just usually go to travel shop in bkk and book,too easy.

I've taken the Air Asia flight, and then went on to Samui via the Ferry
I spent no time at all in Surat Thai, and the only advice I can give is the airport is far from town so make travel arrangements or pay the taxi mafia.

I have been to only Samui which is in Surat Thani but I dont know anything else about it

Yea the airport is some distance from town, try the Thai airways desk, they sometimes have a mini van going to there town office. There are a few decent hotels around that im sure youre friend will have the low down on.
