Have a great time and I'm sure you will experiencing the Songkran for the the first time

Like fellow BM's have mentioned keep your phone and money inside plastic bags on your person as you will get soaked for sure

The Songkran is the "THAI" New Year for "THAI" people in "THEIR" Country so "Up to them" how they celebrate it

Enjoy the occasion with the "Thai" people instead of "Falang" and you will love it

        Thats my opinion anyway

Come on guys, what happened to "urbane & witty"? Sparkling rhetoric is what's needed around here...
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

Finding a hotel in Pattaya during songkran? (walk in) risky or not?

(farang_oz @ Jan. 08 2009,13:27) I have been to Thailand 8 times but never experienced their new year. Is it worth going (pattaya & bangkok) or is it best avoided?
In a word, yes. Its definitely worth experiencing Songkran in Pattaya.

Like Doitrong, our first trip to Thailand (and Pattaya) was during Songkran and we had a ball.

Sure it does get to be a bit of a pain in the ass as the days drag on, but the obvious happiness and festivity of the locals is just contagious...

Of course if you find it hard to gain pleasure from the happiness of others and getting wet drives you mad, its probably best avoided altogether...

(SamplerDoc @ Jan. 09 2009,10:10) Oz, I think if you use the search function you may find past threads on this that are helpful.

That aside, one day of water fun is enough then you will want to lay low with a gal indoors
i love this festival... it's exciting... well my bf don't really like it but i go out with Thai sister and enjoying it..
and definitely will come back again to see it, right sayang?

Exactly what is the happiness in throwing water at eachothers? Please explain? I don´t get it.

!  I stay inside unless it is absolutely necessary to leave.  I get some good movies to watch and order pizza delivered to the front door.  I was in Chiang Mai for Songkran 4 years ago for the first time, and ended up staying on the hotel property all day.  Every time I wanted to go sight seeing, I got drenched  when I left the hotel property.  Just one guys opinion

I'm going to jump on the anti-Songkran bandwagon. A couple of years ago, the only weeks I was able to take my vacation happened to overlap the festival (I was staying in Pattaya). Never again. I guess I'm getting old and cranky (I',m in my forties), but having eurotrash throw buckets of ice cold water on me just is not my idea of fun. To me fun would be squirt guns where one gets a little wet. However when even riding on the baht bus you become a target and get soaked is too much for me.

and thats why I spent it in bars where there were hardly any "falang" and had fun with the "Thais" instead
