  • Train From Pattaya to Bangkok

Has anyone ever taken the Bangkok-Pattaya train?

I need to get to the Bangkok train station from Pattaya. Might try the 31 baht train cause it seems like the timing is right. Anyone know if either Pattaya train station is near a baht bus route?

If I took a bus from Pattaya which bus station would I want to get to in Bangkok? How long and expensive would the taxi be from the BKK bus station to the BKK train station? Or is there a van from Pattaya which will drop me near the BKK train station?

The train looks intriguing, can anyone verify the info below?

Provided it's a weekday, the most economical way to travel between Pattaya and Bangkok by public transport is by rail - the one-way fare is just 31 baht, and if you've never experienced a 3rd class Thai train, this can be an interesting experience.

From Monday to Friday, a single daily 3rd class (non-aircon) train departs Bangkok's Hualamphong Train Station at 6:50AM and arrives at the main Pattaya station at 10:18AM, before continuing on to Sattahip; it then returns via Pattaya at 2:21PM and terminates back in Bangkok at 5:40PM (on Saturdays and Sundays it turns back to Bangkok at Chachoengsao, so is of no practical use for getting to or from Pattaya at weekends). Regardless of direction, simply turn up and buy a ticket at the station - this train can't be pre-booked.

Pattaya has two train stations, both just east of Sukhumvit Road:

    * Pattaya Train Station (tel. +66-38429285) is the main stop, just north of the junction with Central Pattaya Road (from Sukhumvit Road, turn into Soi Pornprapanimit and then turn left immediately before the road crosses the railway line). A Baht Bus waits here for the train to arrive and charges a reasonable 30 baht/person to anywhere in the Pattaya Beach area; in the opposite direction, budget around 40-50 baht for a motorbike taxi from Beach Road. Facilities comprise a small snacks / chilled drinks counter, toilets, a solitary payphone, and the ticket office - which also sells maps of Pattaya.

    * Pattaya Tai Train Station is a small unmanned halt about 3 km further south, and hence closer to Jomtien, near the Sukhumvit / Thepprasit Road intersection.

At the main Pattaya Train Station, tickets must be bought before boarding and are only sold in the final 30 minutes prior to departure. The fare from/to Bangkok is 31 baht, from/to Sattahip 6 baht.

As the Pattaya Tai halt has no ticket office, passengers are permitted to board here without tickets and then pay on the train (32 baht to Bangkok).

The surcharge for transporting a bicycle (up to 20 kg) between any two points on this line (ie Bangkok-Sattahip) is 80 baht.

Tickets for other journeys can be purchased (up to a maximum of 60 days in advance) at the Pattaya Train Station ticket office between 8AM and 4PM; the same tickets can also be arranged through Pattaya agencies, who will add on a 200-300 baht markup to cover their assistance and the cost of sending a moto-taxi to collect the tickets from the station.

I know of someone who has taken that train, no problems.  But is it very basic, wood seats, no a/c, etc.

If you need to be at Hualamphong anyway, and the timing works (barring delays) it's not bad. But put a delay in there and you have a problem and will wish you took the bus.

I should ask where you are going on the train from Bangkok? I ask this because most trains from Bangkok have a first stop at Bang Su Railway station, which is only about a 5-10 minute taxi ride from Mo Chit bus terminal.  So you could take a bus from Pattaya to Mo Chit, then catch the train there to wherever you are going, thus avoiding Hualamphong all together.

To see what I mean, click on this Google Map link: Google Map of Chatuchuk area - the letter "A" at the top of the map is Mo Chit bus terminal, and towards the bottom of the map is Bang Su Railway station, probably about 3 km away.

      Hello PD,

The only bit I can answer is that all the buses from Pattaya arrive at Ekkamai bus station which is about 3 minutes walk from the BTS.
You could go to the National Stadium stop in about 12-15 minutes (30 Baht I think) and taxi NS to Hualamphong Train Station about 10 minutes and 50-60 Baht.

Taxi direct from Ekkamai to Hualamphong Train Station would be about 20-25 minutes (depending on traffic!) and around 100 Baht.

      RR.

          Thanks guys!

I'll be heading south from Bangkok to Surat Thani.

As for delays I figured the Pattaya=Bangkok train would be more relaible than a bus or van since it can't get stuck in traffic. I guess it can break down though.

As I said in post 2, I suggest taking the Pattaya-Mo Chit bus then getting on the train at Bang Su. Hualompong-Surat Thani train's first stop is Bang Su.  This will save you a ton of time and hassle, as you eliminate going to Hualompong.

When you book your train ticket, specify you will be departing from Bang Su, not Bangkok.

              Thanks Eyemahk!

According to this Schedule (click on Southern Line) the first stop is Nakhom Pathon. Do they just leave out Bang Su for simplicty or is this particular pdf outdated?

Hmm, not sure about this.  I took this exact same train about 5 months ago, and it had a stop at Bang Su, I got on and off there!  My guess is that it is left off the schedule for simplicity. However, it is certainly possible that they eliminated the stop, but I doubt it.

When you attempt to buy your ticket Bang Su to Surat Thani, I'm sure you will get the answer.    But what I would not do is try to board at Bang Su if you have a Bangkok ticket. This is because of the chance of them marking you as a no-show out of Bangkok.

FYI, you should be able to buy a future train ticket in advance at any Thailand railway ticket office for any train.

                  Bus Directions.

Take the Bus to Ekkami, then take the sky train three stops to Asoke, then switch to the Subway and take that directly to Hualamphong.
The subway connects directly with the skytrain at Asoke, you just take the escalator down.
                  ---
                  In regards to the train,
                  1) Train service has been disrupted due to the PAD political rally -- not a clue if this is currently affecting Bangkok-Pattaya , or Bangkok-Surat Thani route.
                  2) As part of the government's economic relief measures, some train rides are free (3rd class). no idea if that includes this route and if it applies to Farang.

BangkokPost.com) - The cabinet on Tuesday gave a green light to add more third class train services on four routes without charge.

State Railway of Thailand (SRT) governor Yutthana Thapcharoen said the four routes include Bangkok - Chiang Mai, Bangkok - Ubon Ratchathani, Bangkok - Nong Khai and Bangkok - Sungai Kolok.

He said train passengers do not have to take multiple rides, and they do not have to pay the fares even though the SRT could lose profit by 28 million baht a month.

This is one of the government's six short-term economic relief measures, the governor added.

Too many girls working this month so teerak took a voluntary layoff. Headed to Samui but got sticker shock when I saw the plane prices.

I've travelled 2nd class sleeper before and it was OK but may spring for an extra 400 baht each for 1st class since it's a holiday. Anyone out there been on a 1st class sleeper?

U going to Khao Sok Snickster? Heard lot's of leeches in the park proper.

I did a trip to Chiang Mai in 1st class sleeper back in 2001. Very comfortable, nice beds - good since you have privacy with only 2 people in compartment. Good alternative way to travel and if you feel the urge to do some horizontal activities, just lock the door!

Last time I went to Koh Phangnan (Samui) I flew to Surat Thani then took the ferry...its a bit of a pain in the ass. But I was on a schedule. You're more flexible timewise than me, so it should be fine.

Get on the Ferry early or you will not get a seat.

Thanks for the heads up about the leaches, I'll keep that in mind when I go there and dress accordingly (and bring a lighter w/ me to get them off).

Personally I wouldn't bother with the trains.

The train station in Pattaya isn't in Pattaya, and when getting off at Surat Thani you still need to catch a bus and wait for a ferry.

From Pattaya I'd take a bus to Ekkamai, then a taxi over to Southern Bus Terminal and hop on a VIP bus, they leave at around 19:00 & 19:30 daily.
Get your teerak to have a look here: http://www.transport.co.th/main.asp (don't know English version)

..or head over to Khao San Road (*spit*) they have nice buses leaving daily, there's more likely to be backpackers on board than the other bus which is mostly Thai and some half decent farangs

The Surat Thani train I took to Ratchaburi was comfortable enough, but although it was a 'fast' service it felt awfully slow lol

Not much to see from the windows except jungle...

At least that's how I remember it..
