(eslmiker @ Sep. 01 2008,07:50) So, to go or not to go?
It is going to take something more than a few demonstrations to stop me going.

I could boast about surviving different coups that occurred during several visits.

First visit in the 70's, the troops were shooting University students a block away from where we walking.

The only problem with my story of valour under fire.....
I had no idea what the fuck was going on!

Don't be persuaded to stay home because of the news,
life goes on as normal & you will be even more popular with fewer tourists around.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

Any advice if I should bother going to Phuket tomorrow? Seems that I could get stuck there for a bit...

I am here in LOS for two weeks with no real schedule/plans and have never been to Phuket and would like to go for a few days...

It seems OK at the moment but it is a tough call from 1000's of kilometres away.

It is the 2nd busiest airport in the country & the bad news is resulting in travel cancellations so the govt can't let the protestors move back to shut it again,

                                          but TIT    (this is Thailand)

I would go but I would hate to hear that tourists were trapped to be used as a bargaining tool with the Prime Minister.

Pattaya might be a safer bet....

(stogie bear @ Sep. 01 2008,17:48) Democracy is a thing of the past.
The Iron Fist does have its avantages. As William Joyce said, " The path to Democracy is the road to oblivion"
The BBC were warning people to stay away from large crowds. Talk about stating the fucking obvious...

I've made the decision to do, unless of course the airport is shut down before I have to leave.

I feel the worst think that could happen is that I am stuck (not concerned for my personal safety)...I have the flexibility in my schedule that if I am stuck there for an extended period of time the biggest impact on me is that I have a new story to tell.

Now if anyone feels that my safety is at risk please let me know, otherwise I am 100% ok with the inconvenience of being stuck for a while!

Oh an this is a bit off but doesn't anyone have a tailor to recommend in patong?

              Things are getting worse here

The government just declared a state of Emergency for Bangkok - no idea what this means

Thai Airways announced they will join the protest and have a 'slow down' starting Wednesday

              Amazing Thailand

                  ok snick...
                  hrrrrm hrrrm *clears his throat*

...let me reformulate the question, your honor...

"if the military was to take over power again, are there any reasons for us to fear military rule?"

from your point of view, what influence would military prolonged rule have on:

                  - the economy
                  - immigration laws
                  - labor regulations
                  - security
                  - the bar scene
                  - the barfines and ST/LT prices
                  - utility costs
                  - the climate
                  - Mint's dick
                  - the temperature of the water of Stogie's pool?

The water in stogies pool will get warmer.

The real outcome of this is a high chance of new elections in December or January which will add a lot of dry weekends, this with all the other turmoil will probably make for the worst high season on record.

On the bright side, the baht will get weaker and girls will get more desperate.

ps. The military does not want to take over, they already did that and it was no fun.

                      Apparently according to http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2008....270.php

"The state of emergency prohibits gathering of more than five people"

Does this mean the Riot police will be in to clear the Nana car park at 2am?

I fly tonight, i hope i get there

Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej imposed a state of emergency in Bangkok on Tuesday morning. It was invoked under the Executive Decree for National Administration under an Emergency Situation. It is to remain in effect until Nov 30.
