I usually rent an automatice 125cc scooter from Direk Motors on Soi Buakow. This costs me 1000 baht per week. I think the daily charge is 220 baht.
They give a very good service and have never tried to rip me off with charges for damage or repairs. Once I had the helmet stolen and they only charged 200 baht for a new one.
I prefer an automatic as I can concentrate on the traffic rather than the gears. This would certainly be the best choice if you are not familiar with motor-bikes.
When renting they will require a copy of your passeport and take a 1000 baht deposit against damage. Make sure you have their phone number in case of a breakdown.
Would also advise to use your digital camera or cell phone camera to take photos every area of the bike, especially any areas that show damage. Be sure the shop owner/manager sees this.
This will help resolve any disputes about damage you did not incur but attempting to charge you for on completion of the rental.
I use the cheapest form of transport - walking! I use baht bus if pissed or with lady because thais dont like to walk. I would never use a motorbike, see to many accidents over the years.
First time I went to Pattaya, did not dare to get on a motorbike. Second time, rode on the back of a few and had a great time. Going for third time in October and plan to try renting a motorbike. Can I just use my California driver license or should I get an International Driver License? Thanks!
Always take an international driving permit with you.
I don't know what you pay in the US but in the UK they are only £5.50 - I'm guessing the US will be around $10.
If you are stopped by the police sometimes they will take your driving licence and you have to go to the police station to 'pay' to get it back.
If they lose it or get crazy about the fine then you are going to have to pay for a new US licence when you get home - which I'm guessing will be more than $10.
With the intenational permit you can just hand it over and forget about it.
I have an out of date one which I hand over first. Most of the time they can't read it and don't know what it is so they just give it back and tell me to go away.
If they pick up the date I just pull out the in date one and say opps sorry wrong one.
No way will I give them my UK one!
