If you can buy them in commision free in your home country (AMEX card holders may be able to get them commision free) then get them in the biggest denomination possible and you'll get a better deal than cash.

(rxpharm @ Aug. 25 2008,16:01) RR, wow, it's been a long time since you've cashed traveller's cheques, the stamp duty is now 33 baht per cheque (close to 1 USD).
Oops! Yes that should have read 33 Baht.

Not sure how I missed that and always read my posts through before pressing the 'Add Reply'button.

      RR.

That's the beauty of the Flex Account card  -  NO exchange fees!

I did an experiment and exchanged cash and did an ATM card withdraw the same day.
There was a slight difference but it was something like 0.02 Baht/£  -  less than the difference between exchange booths.

        RR.

Yes because the Interbank rate changes through out the day.
The rate you get has nothing to do with the bank you withdraw from they tell Nationwide you withdrew xxxx amount of baht then Nationwide go to the Interbank rate at that time, exchange it to pound Sterling and debit your account.

My own experiences of this are that the Interbank rates are about 1 baht to the pound more than the booths pay. A good guide to what you would get can be found here.
