  • Cell phones for my vacation in Pattaya

Coming to Patts in July. Will I be able to rent a cell phone for two weeks and if so;where?
Or will I need to bring my own and get it chipped for use in Thailand.
On leaving Thailand I assume the chip will need to be removed again!
What are the charges involved in both cases and where can it be done.
    Thank you for your time.

I would recommend buying a cheap, new phone for about 1000 baht. Sim card should be about 300 baht. In 5 minutes you're good to go.

And you pay as u go, maybe 100 baht a week depending how often you use your phone.

You can buy at Tuk Com on Pattaya South Road or in the Big C mall on 2nd Road and Soi 2.

and if you are in BKK go to MBK. Try the search button here to, I think there were threads on this before. Cheers.

        Yep...

You can buy a brand new phone with a sim card for 1,000 baht.

Or you can get your own phone unlocked and buy a cheap sim card when you get here, but for just a few days then just buy a disposable one, give it to the babe you are with on your last night!

Second hand phones are even cheaper.

To the best of my knowledge you can't 'rent' a phone in Pattaya or even at the airport anymore.

Mobiles and calls are extremely cheap in Thailand.

If you happen to get to MBK you can now buy sim cards for as little as 49 baht in a few stalls and I see them all the time for 99 baht...

Here's another good discussion on the topic: Mobile phones in Thailand

North American phones use a different system, so if you do want to bring your own phone to use, make sure it is NOT locked and is at least Triband or Quadband. You may be able to get it unlocked by some of the phone shops. However, buying a cheap used phone is one of the best options. By the way, if you meet some babes and you want their numbers for future reference, save the number to the phone memory and keep the phone for your next visit. That way if you need to change sims, the numbers are still retained.

As people have already said buy a cheap mobile (I got a brand new Nokia for 1200 baht )

Every  time you top up you get another months credit , so if you head back regularly and top up enough you can use the same phone every trip without changing your sim or number .

I've used the same phone the last 4 trips now , and its well packed with numbers

Actually I tried it but it did not work.  But when you top up your phone the credit last for quite a while.  I think my current Thai phone is valid until 2009 something (not 100% sure), so now I always fill up the credit a bit one of the last days of my stay.
