We have a couple of regular drivers who are both excellent.

We pay 1,200 baht per 'door to door' trip which includes tolls and tips.

With the roads almost done now the trip is very fast these days. (Usually well under 2 hours.)

Even the bus is fast and at about 120 baht from Ekkamai bus station on the BTS train stop it couldn't be easier.

Stogie, I have only ever gone down by car but on every occasion I have seen these coaches (usually brightly coloured) on the road with a double decker look to them - and with tables, seats etc downstairs.

Are these the 120 baht jobs? Always seem to have some nice babes on board!

The 120 baht buses are always blue and have the destinations 'Bangkok' and 'Pattaya' written in large black letters on the side.

Most are old however there are a few newer ones in the fleet.

The newer looking, brightly colored, double deckers that you see are tour groups. The older ones are for ferrying factory workers from place to place.

When I'm traveling to Pattaya alone for a few days I take the bus...it's cheap and as fast or faster than a taxi for some reason...They leave like every 30 minutes so there is no waiting...

Many times I've just stopped a taxi on BKK streets and got one to take me for 1000 baht plus tolls...

If you stay at one the BKK Dynasty's, they have a free shuttle but you have to stay at one of their hotels Pattaya...As I recall it's 500 baht to return to BKK on their shuttle...

Coming back to BKK, you can get a taxi at any of the many taxi stands scattered around Pattaya...I've paid as little as 800 and as much as 1200 baht all in...or take the bus for around 120 baht...Again they leave like every 30 minutes...But be sure to tell them you want a ticket to Ekkamai or you might end up at the wrong BKK bus station..

I realize taking a Thai public bus can be a little daunting for foreigners, but I've traveled all over Isaan in the damn things and kinda enjoy the ride...

And I sometimes feel a bit more comfortable in the bus with a bunch of smelling Thais than all alone in a taxi driven by a guy who thinks he's 3 laps behind...

Yeah, I always seem to get that taxi driver too. BTW are the Thais smelling you or just smelling in general.
Stogie I have just booked the PBR and noted the airport transfer was 1300bht, your giving away your "mates rates"

I don't know about PBR transfer rates. The 1,200 rate me and TT use are from people recommended to us by locals.

We could do it cheaper but why?

Good choice of hotel... I usually go to the Villa diner for a bit of grub. It's a two minute walk and very cheap.

Mr. Toom has never let me down. 1200 inclusive, drivers who go fast without going crazy and who know their way around Pattaya, so you're not driving hopelessly looking for your hotel. Can't go wrong.

I take the bus. It really painless, they leave every 20 or 30 minutes during peak hours, and they will run a spare bus if things fill up.
Just take the Skytrain to Ekkami station, and the bus station is right below, $4, 2 hours, and you are in Pattaya.

( and if you are lucky you'll see some LB on the bus )

You actually believe that it is wise to rent a car to drive around BKK and Pattaya for two weeks?

It is not wise to rent a car, unless you are sufficiently flush to hire a driver along with it, if you are thinking about BKK and Pattaya. Taxis are cheap enough why bother?
