  • Patong Beach

I've just returned home after another month overseas, spending 5 of them in Patong.

I have to ask- what has happened to Patong beach?

Its green, dirty & slimy - scum and slicks on the top of the water.

I lasted less than 10 minutes in the water and became itchy and had to go back to my hotel for a shower. Same happened for other people i know who went swimming.

    It appears ruined!!

I been going to Patong for a number of years and this is the first time it was unusable - I'd go as far as saying Pattaya looks better!

Anyone heard what going on there???

I would guess a mixture of faecal matter and bacteria from your description.

sea lice. Get a mbike, go to the south end of the beach, up and over the hill to the next bay- it's far nicer (and quieter). I wouldn't go in the sea off Patong Beach if you paid me

Are you referring to the little hidden 'paradise beach?'

the big beach just before you go over the final hill to paradise beach- I know it as Taweewong, across from the big hotel. I'll have a look at the road sign tomorrow. The road is paved all the way to Paradise Beach now as well

well, lets not get carried away too much here, azza!!

Patong has almost become Pattaya south, unfortunately...... probably why myself and many others haven't been there in a long while and have no plans to go back; too many damn ex- commie tourists, goofy couples and families with kids, bangla blocked off to resemble walking street, damn tuk-tuk drivers WAY over-charging, etc, etc...... and now you say this about the beach water?

damn, I remember a time when patong was a paradise on earth; it didn't take long for 'em to fuck THAT up, huh?

Yeah, when I was there in January, after looking at that circus, I wasn't going anywhere near that water.
All my swimming was off of boats in between dives when I was either out diving or kayaking.
Kata and Karong didn't look too bad, although I never swan there either.

I'll stand by my words Jaidee - its fooking awful and i'd swim at Pattaya over Patong beach.

It's possible its caused sewerage plant (close to patong i believe) putting too much nutrients in the water - maybe Ivor Biggun can confirm this as a local?

I have been there almost exactly one year ago, and the bea(it)ches and water were nice

too many people and an overstretched infrastrucure is the main problem. Even with the upgrade the sewerage plant can't keep up with the input and the sea pipe isn't long enough apparently. if water quality was an issue though I'd be prepared to put money on patong being cleaner than Patts any day. Also bear in mind the time of year you are here- heavy rainfalls deposit a hell of an amount of silt in the water and it takes a couple of days to clear. Just coz the water's 'dirty' doesn't mean it isn't clean if you get my drift.

You're a funny chap, Ivor. You venture to Bangla once a week, and you never use the beach in Patong! I'm wondering why you choose to live here . Is there something about nanai Road i don't know about?

Incidentally, i went to the beach yesterday, and it was lovely. The water was clear and clean.
Yes, in rainy season, the currents change and bring in a lot of rubbish that's normally just floating about in the Indian Ocean, but for the next 4 months the beach is lovely, if a bit crowded.
