  • Guess Bar - March 2009

Quite a few forum members are worried about the decline of Guess Bar, judging by gossip I've heard, and experiences I've had there recently.

Is it because Jay has lost interest - or is spending too much time at her other business? .... leaving the 'management' of Guess Bar to Gong (and to a member of Jay's family).

The girls (with a few notable exceptions ... Tam and Jasmine particularly) seem totally disinterested in greeting the regulars. I presume because we are not often barfining we are like wallpaper to them.  I do buy drinks quite willingly for those girls prepared to make the effort (eg Jenny).  And the previous habit of girls offering to get drinks for customers has waned (coincidentally with the absence of Beer - who was a great ambassador for the bar).

The place seems to be run as a private pool club, for the interests of the staff (NOT the customers).  Screeching and screaming round the pool table, seems more like a zoo than a welcoming drink/LB environment.

Hopefully this thread (if you agree?) will be a bit of a wake-up call to the bar.  If not, I will be taking my custom elsewhere.

One man's meat is another man's poison!

It's funny how we had a thread recently for a bar in Pattaya that was TOO aggressive and now we have one for one that is seemingly not aggressive enough!

When ever I go (and that isn't often) the music is great and it's quiet. The girls leave me alone and the drinks are generous and well priced. It's one of the few bars where the smokers are forced outside.

The screeching around the pool table is a small price to pay!

To me, Guess Bar is as good as it can be but I'm not most people and I'll bet more people are likely to emphathise with TT's frustration.

It's certainly not short of customers... at least not when I have been there.

Perhaps the hardest thing for the staff there is to figure out whether or not you want to be mobbed (attended to) or not. Some do and some don't and we all look the same to them!

This is going to be a great thread!

As for taking custom elsewhere? I don't know where that might be. In my view there's no place else that I feel comfortable drinking at in the whole of Bangkok.

I'll go down tonight and give the shitpits a try... Maybe they have become more customer friendly since I last went there in October last year.

      (Stogie @ Mar. 24 2009,16:34) One man's meat is another man's poison!
That's certainly very true, and just to illustrate the point, I had a most enjoyable time in Stringfellows last night, where a party was in full swing for Bob's better half.

I even had the lovely Suzy sitting on my lap, and not one request for ladydrinks the entire time I was there.

Having just spent a couple of nights at Guess Bar, I can certainly appreciate where TT Chang is coming from, and there is no doubt the service and attitude of the girls is not like it used to be.

However, relative to what they 'dish up' down the road at Nana Plaza, I'd still prefer to spend my time at Guess Bar any day.

On a positive note, the ladies on offer at Guess Bar are still top notch, and I was quite impressed with the overall talent.

I concur that the "Guess Bar Experience" of old seems like a distant memory, or are our expectations just not realisitic ?

      Cheers

the first time i visit Guess Bar, it was still on the old location..
was really nice place, girls are friendly and i feel comfortable. so i come back again few times.

but last time i was in bangkok, come to visit there with my bf to say hello and drink, guess bar was moved to new location but i didn't find the same feeling.

the girls seems bitchy, only ohm come to say hello. and gong said something that sounds rude to me,
        we didn't feel welcome there...
so we decided to left from there and go to get drink somewhere else..

too bad.. cos i really enjoy being there with all girls...

You hit the nail on that one. I've only been in there 2 of 3 times and the girls were bored and complained about no customers. When I said that I can see many guys in here, they all replied that it was just some cunts who hang out there and would never give them any business.
They said some guys even bring outside ladyboys into Guess. Not so popular

At the end of the day these girls aren't eye candy for the lads while they sink a few quiet ales and chat amongst themselves.
These are working girls... this is a glorified parlour - any way you dress it up - these ladies are only there to earn cash.

So any wonder when things are down they are gonna bitch and moan and snob of those who they know are not going to line their back pocket.

              Reality check please!!

& one of the girls told Leo I was in town ,so got loads of shite from her on messenger, why do they do this shite !

I'm such an infrequent visitor to BKK and Guess these days that I am reluctant to post comments...

However, I did spend two evenings there a weekend or so ago and I can certainly see why TTC has
started this thread...There was indeed a much different feeling...

Many of the original girls I've known since the bar opened didn't even bother to say hello to me...

And of the 4 newer girls who did, only two...Moo and Yo...actually bothered to sit and talk with me
                  a bit...

However, I will echo Koykaeng's remarks...However shitty it has become, it still beats the shit out of
the shit they dish up in the shit-pits of NEP...

And it may also be that TTC has been spoiled a bit by his recent visit to Pattaya...

Ok, maybe Guess needs to be held to a bit higher standard due to its unique format, but isn't this true in any bar in Thailand catering to farangs? The girls are after money and there is no emphasis on customer service or satisfaction whatsoever. If they see no potential gain, they ignore you. But one thing I do give all the bars credit for is within seconds of touching the seat you've got your drink ordered and delivered! And if you are spending money on ladydrinks and so on, the level of service then goes way up.

I never went to the original Guess bar so i cant compare the two. I visited new Guess Bar for the 1st time earlier this year and thought it is a great bar to relax and have a good time...I kind of understand where ttchang is coming from because towards the end i didnt get hellos from people i spoke to before mainly because they knew i wasnt going to barfine them however there was always people to chat to. So no problems my favourite bar in BKK.

Well I am almost the original Guess bar patron. Spent more money and time in this place than most and I have to agree with TTChang Guess bar has become ordinary. I will not elaborate on my night there a few weeks back suffice to say I will not be buying another bottle of Jim Beam again.

Is this not endemic of Thailand as a whole at the moment though. I walked along the beach road in patong yesterday and the beach was virtually deserted. "Regulars' and 'Punters' are the same in every bar. Frequent visitors are set in their ways and the girls know it, which is why we get left alone and they jump on the 'newbies'. It's very much a 'familiarity breeds contempt' attitude from girls in bars as well as they know what we will and won't do so I can see where TTCh is coming from
I couldn't give a shit how long it is until you're next holiday- I live here
