Indonesia Warning!!!

As Angelo would say "Gentlemen of the Board" I just pulled this of the FCO web site and hope it is of use to anyone contemplating travel to this part of the world:

Indonesia

We advise against all non-essential travel to Indonesia. There continues to be a high risk of terrorism directed against Westerners throughout the country. If you are already in Indonesia you should consider leaving if your presence is not essential. The number of U.K. based staff at the British Embassy in Jakarta has been reduced. The Indonesian government has declared martial law in Aceh and violence has increased. The government has also declared a 12-mile exclusion zone in the seas around Aceh.

Not quite sure what you mean there Topper. I travel very extensively throughout the world. This update was posted by the British Governments Foreign and Commonwealth Office who do NOT issue something like this lightly.

Make you own mind up and travel (if you actually do physically travel anywhere other than in your own fantasies) accordingly and safely.

Thaipan me old mate, Im not defending Indo at all, but wev'e had these warnings for the past 10 years and its only just come to the surface since the bali bombings. Looking at the website you put up,,most of it dates back to 2000..
and recently the Thai police arrested a dozen or so terrorists on the outskirts of bangkok, so do we put off our travel to bkk/pattaya or phuket???
NOT ON YOUR FUCKING LIFE WE DONT.
My personal thoughts on all this,,,is just keep on doing what and where we want..

This is my first post and if I am out of line just tell me to piis off but I feel strongly about the issue of terrorism.

It was terrorists that dropped the twin towers in New York. Does this mean that NY should be evacuated. It doesn't matter where you are because these aniamls don't care where they bomb or who they kill as long as they scare the hell out of everyone else. If the rest of the world stops travelling they will stop communicating which will lead to suspician and fear which will eventually lead to the biggest war ever. Presto the terrorists will have won.

It is up to each individule to be sensible by all means about what they do and where they go. But people must continue to travel if only to show these animals that they wont win and are not welcome on this planet, solar system or universe. It's a pity that ther isn't something worse than death for these murderers.

Terrorism is the plague of our days and you can never be really safe. But what's the alternative? Stay at home wanking 24h? I'm forced to do this too much anyway here in bloody safe middle-Europe, but I'll be damned if I will skip my travels because of some fucking terrorists. I don't give a shit of what they want and if they blow me up, they'll do it anway, but before I'll have a nice bang with Wicky, Anna, Roxy, Dina,....they are worth it and as we can't live forever anyway, we should choose the fun way!

Guys don't get me wrong, I agree with the majority of what has been said on this thread. I also whole heartedly agree that we should not lie down to terrorism of any sort and I will not be cancelling my 3 trips to BKK in October. I was simply forwarding some information that I had come across. It is up to each of us individually to decide whether to heed it or not.

My motto on travel, is to be aware of what is happening around you and travel safely.

Why all the aggressive comments! Thaipan is only passing on useful information.
If you all cast your minds back about 6 weeks, the Australian Government issued a travel warning about travel to Thailand. The local press published the comments of certain politicians who said that it was offensive to Thailand and that Thailand should retaliate by issuing a travel warning about Australia.
To Thaksin's credit, he came out and said it is every countries right to issue warnings to protect their citizens travelling overseas.
Two weeks later they captured those idiots down at the Malaysian border.
On them was a list of targets...the Australian, USA and English Embassy......the Emporium shopping Centre (which is just down the road from where I live with my family) and Nana Plaza. Most of you have been to Nana....could you imagine the damage caused by a truck load of explosives driven into the courtyard!
Now I didn't pack up and go home, nor did I stop going to Nana or the Emporium.
It's like AIDS. We all know it's there but it doesn't stop you from having sex. It just means you have to factor in the risk. But it is certainly better to be aware of the risk than to be ignorant. Ignorance will get you dead before sex or travel!
On the other hand SARS was the biggest load of media hyped bullshit ........ sorry different subject...
