As Friedfrunk and others have said the Angkor complex and some of the others a few Km away are simply STUNNING AMAZING places that you simply MUST visit and the sooner the better. The fact that you wander at will over such old monuments is in itself amazing. Get there and experience it all before it roped off like in many other places. The walls of Apsara and murals are visually stunning. The detail is exquisite. Nothing is the same, the stone masons and artisans must have been genius. University of Melbourne Australia lazer mapped a lot of the main Angkor complex back in 2004-2005.

As stated the place is so enormous that often you are the only person there. When a million?? people lived around there it must have been an amazing place. It would be easy to RAVE about this place for days...... Friedfrunk's excellent photos only give you a tiny appetiser.

One regret i have is not spending more than one day at Angkor Wat. In truth i was to busy pissing it up and enjoying the rest of Cambodia!
On a plus point i can return at some point and i will, but deep down i know i did no justice to this magical place and one of the most important ancient finds!

Angkor Wat, what can I saw? Wonderful, magical place, spent a winter's afternoon cycling around the area with my brother. For anyone planning to visit, cycling is quite doable as the roads are level all the way. Great bit of adventure, like being a kid again, but on a grander scale.

Technically Angkor Wat is just one of many temples in the huge site known as Angkor Archaeological Park. That's quite a mouthful, so the collection of temples is simply called Angkor Wat for convenience. You must visit, paccie.

Now the reviews are in & there isn't a negative comment about Angkor Wat. It is obviously a must see destination. I have seen many famous sites in Asia, never been to China & seen the Great Wall unfortunately but the only one that truly exceeded my expectations, that was far better than anything I imagined, was the Taj Mahal.

And following up on Torurot's comment about fools vandalising such historical places, all around the base of the Taj were idiotic carvings boasting such trivia as "John was here". How they had time or opportunity to do such damage I have no idea but I would be in favour of doing more than kicking them in the river. Making them eligible to sing for the Vienna Boys Choir seems far more apt...

Yes, Angkor What is still a very popular haunt for tourists. Seems to be the most popular backpacker hangout in Pub Street. Graffiti walls. Open till about 3am.

I wanted to take shots of Angkor Wat like your excellent first pic. With pink lotuses in the foreground. But there was restoration works going on. A giant blue canvas and unsightly scaffolding covered a large section of the temple. Drats.
