Those in China probably know pinyin ok, but for those who don't, pronunciation is as follows.

Ren = e is like the u in burn. Not the ur, just the u.
        Yao = sounds like Yow

        A complete sentence could be:

Zhe li you mei you Ren Yao. If they answer You, you struck gold (rare in China), if Mei You, then get youself to Tong Ren Rd in Shanghai

              Hi Ernesto,

Good to see that you are planning one of your trips again. I personally love Yunnan but have never seen any lbs there - did you get any special info or are you basically trying yr luck?

Kunming is a nice city with a great climate all year round. 2 years ago I arrived there in summer from humid Beijing and the air was pleasant and coolish. But my favourites are Lijiang and even more so, Dali where I could easily spend a few weeks, but again no lbs, not even any p4p-ggs unless you hit any of the bathhouses in the new part of town (Lijiang). But that is a hit or miss thing. Went up all the way to Zhongdian and want to venture into Xizang (Tibet) the next time which is quite easy to get to from Yunnan - permit- and travelwise.

From Kunming one can also fly to Vientienne in Laos which should be much better for lb-action. There is even a bus for the more budget-minded. Or one flies to Jinghong down south in the Xushuangbanna region and there should be a boat service to Laos and even into Thailand.

What do you mean by doorman - the ones at the hotel or the bathhouse? I could be wrong but you will most probably get puzzled looks, plenty of stares and giggles, always tests my patience in China how they react or perhaps I have gotten oversensitive after 4 years.

If you do find any, please take pics which you always do anyway and let me know where. Prices might also be on the high side and service on the poor, including throat-clearing sounds and spitting - still haven't gotten used to those sounds and probably never will.

But apart from these shortcomings, Yunnan is great. Lijiang is probably one of the cleanest places I have been to in China, even the restrooms in the old town are spotless and odorfree! Great bargain hunts for semi-antiques or Naxi-arts and craft-items.

              Have a great trip.

Not that I am a pro at this, but I'd say that "ren" is pronounced like pen in English, just with an "r", or is that too putonghua?

Zhe li (here) you (have) mei you (not have) Ren Yao (lbs)?

                or

Zhe li ren yao you ma?

Thanks for the hint on Tong Ren Lu in Shanghai - could you be more specific in case you know - where, at what time, prices, safety issues, quality of the lbs, ...

Even in Shanghai, I haven't seen many actual streetwalkers but touts to take you to places with girls and unless you know the place, many are rip-offs. Sorry, China simply is not the monger heaven the LOS is. Service is usually rushed and quality is mama huhu ;-)

Thanks for all your most usefull replies.
According to my humble knowledge of Mandarin (Pimsleur
language course) I know that "ren" means person/people
Correct ? (Mei Guo ren = American ?).
Beeing new in a city /country I always use to ask the hotel guys(reception/doorman) first as they do mostly speak English , second taxidrivers but there is a greater risk to get ripped off.
Do they have gay bars in China ? If so I´ll try that and ask there for ladyboys ( successfully practised in Luang Prabang).
                    Chinaman:
                    Thanks your reply
I will start my trip in Kunming, going to Zhongdian(Shangri-La), then via Lijiang to Jinghong from there by boat to Chiang Sean (Thailand) stopping 3 nights in Chiang Mai and continuing via Luang Prabang, Siem Riap to Phnom Phen.(scheduled arrival July 29th). Leave it open when and where to continue (If I should really find some sensational company I might go for a few days to Sihanoukville, otherwise I´ll go to back to Thailand).
This schedule with all hotels, flights, transports, guides is confirmed and payed already.
I have also booked an English speaking guide for China but dont know yet if this will be one person for the whole trip or guides will change in the several cities. As the guides usually are "political reliable" persons, say
secret police members, I am not sure if he will be very useful for "relevant"
                    information.
Anyway should be an interesting trip.

Finding a LB in public in China is not an easy task my friend.
It may be easier to find Franck

My choice for the ren sound was not really good. As you say, it is a bit like just the r sound, or the sound you'd make if you tried to say rn. It's kind of the 'eh' sound. There is a word to describe it, but I've forgotten it.

Manhattan on Tong Ren Lu in Shanghai has ladyboys these days. Mostly Philippinos who come through Hong Kong and are often used to pretty high prices.

You might get lucky for 500RMB (US$70) late at night with an ordinary one, and could pay up to 1500RMB for a nice one. Not any set prices or bar fines.

There is a thread here somewhere is you search Shanghai that goes into more detail.

But as you say, the ladyboy scene in China is mama huhu (so so) to say the least, but at least it seems to be getting better and it's a cheap and quick flight from there to Thailand or Philippines, so not the worst location for a lb hunter.

Not sure what Chinese dialect it originates from, but here in Singapore the local term for LB's is "ah gwa"

I hear kids making fun of other kids calling them ren yao sometimes.

                              'People/person Monster'.

Surely they could have thought of a better term to use.
