  • Dubai Terminal 2 is Operational

On wednesday 5th November at approximatly 2am I arrived at DXB from MAN. My next flight was 3 hours away to KUL. No problem, I like to break the journey up, and enjoy a cigarette.

Terminal 2 is NOT smoker friendly. There is not a single smoking booth in the terminal. Terminal 2 is primarily used for flights to/from Europe/Asia.

Now I did not realise that it is a smoke free zone, so after queing for 45 minutes to get through the security check I am in need of nicotine.

I ask the information desk, 'Where is the smoking area?'. 'In Terminal 1' was the response.

A 1000 metre walk was ahead of me, I am now in greater need of nicotine. For the regular customers of Emirates this could be a deciding factor of which airline to choose in future.

So be prpeared if you enjoy a cigarette and you already have an Emirates flight booked from Europe. The simple solution is to follow the signs to Terminal 1 and then the signs for the Irish Village (bar). But if you can't make that extra 100 metres to the bar you can use the first noticable smoking booth at gate 123 and join the other 50 people smoking outside in the corridor (as the booth can only accommodate 20 people max).

A brand new much needed and impressive terminal at DXB, but no consideration for the smoker. Plus long delays at security if there are numerous flights landing from Europe at the same time. Be prepared...

Think I will fly with Qatar next time!

    Regards, Tiao

It's a growing trend. Sydney International is smoke free with no smoking room.

Then again I'm not sure that it's all bad. I remember last time I was in the smoking room at Bkk it was enough to make me want to quit.

I agree... Emirates all the way, then!

I wish they would ban smokers from flying, not just smoking.

If you ever had to sit next to these smelly people you'd know why.

They fidget and stink. Makes me physically sick to be near them.

They should at least make smokers sit at the back so they don't pollute the airspace of normal people.

They should also ban drinking and women wearing perfume... and don't get me started on 'bomber breath.' Some of these people must eat their own shit I reckon.

God save us from smokers who think they have 'rights' to stink up the world.

For sure, but my point is how stupid is the rationale at DXB. Both terminals are connected (thus appears as one large building). Which has resulted in many people stood outside the booth at gate 123, making it look a very unattractive site. Why should Terminal 2 be none smoking, but Terminal 1 has retained its facilities, but cannot handle the extra volume of passengers who appreciate 'a' cigarette ?

What is the logic here? Travelling used to be fun. Now I prebook my seats at the back of the plan, where I can have 2 seats to myself, close to the galley, and away from the hypocritical non-smokers at the front of the plane.

Become a smoker, sit at the back of the plane, nearer to the bar, greater chance of having 2 seats because who wants to sit next to a 'smelly' smoker.

          Now where is my lighter...

Spoken like a true ex-smoker. I think us ex-smokers notice the smell more than non-smokers.

I was at Abu Dhabi Airport a few hours back unfortunately en route back to Manchester    and the Smoking Room there is like a fuckin Opium Den    so I didnt feel much like a ciggie

Alas as a  Silver Guest member of Etihad Airways I went instead to enjoy the free services of their Premium Lounge    only to discover it had a small smoking room itself

Also with Etihad the Departure Gate at BKK is E1 so I can enjoy the facilities of the Thai Airways Lounge very nearby and then enjoy a ciggie in the smoking room they have in Gate E1 A next door before my Flight

What is hypocritical about being a non-smoker?

I'm an ex smoker and I agree that I am being hypocritical...

I feel sorry for the friends and family that were being nice to me when they had to sit through the stink that I created.

I'm not an anti-smoker, by the way - but I'm anti people who insist that it's some social habit that has to be accepted the same as chewing gum.

I actually still enjoy the smoke and smell of a freshly lit ciggy... Mmm...
