Horney, I'd avoid Chinatown. The build up for the coming Chinese New Year festivities is mounting and the place will be interesting from a shopper's point of view but jampacked!
Consider 4 star hotels in Bras Basah Road (half a mile from Orchard) like Rendevous Hotel or Carlton Hotel. Bras Basah is sort of in between the red light areas of Geylang and Orchard Towers.

u can get many hotels in SG for 100 USD and less and they are already of sufficient quality although unlike this dump i am in now LOL...but i am enjoying the WIFI ahehehe
