Are you talking 3rd ring in BJ or GZ?
The # seems reasonable, at least in BJ - 8 digit #s are the norm for land lines (or do you mean it's strange cuz it's a cell phone? yeah, that would be strange).
Ya know, if you're living there and really up for sleuthing, I'd recommend the following strategy:
Say you're researching LBs in different parts of the world. (Pretend you're Ziggystardust, for instance.) It's a freelance, side job. Then, you've already investigated LBs in several other countries, but work has brought you to China. Now, you're in need of help to find LBs. So, you have a business card that has a few basic things like:
name (or pseudonym), email address, QQ username, possibly some website with a few cute LB pics (nothing nekkid; try an MSN site), and your cell #. Be sure to write that you can't read Chinese, but that you can get an interpreter if needed. (By the way, that might be a way to get familiar with some hot GG, for perhaps a threesome )
Anyway, take your "business card", and circulate it a little. I'd also develop a small repertoire of expressions, etc.
If they ask how your research interests go, feel free to say that you have both professional and personal interests. See what they feel like "sharing".
What can I say? It's one method that may require a lot more work than traipsing around LOS for sex, but it will certainly put you in the avant garde of LB hunters. Along the way, you might end up with a few girlfriends - after all, their exposure to laowai may be limited, and for the time being it's unlikely that they have much support or admiration in China. So, with less competition and a a good rep, you may have all the sex you want.
Best of luck.
Btw, I'd pick up Mandarin if I were you, or Cantonese (given your area). Once you reach 1000 words, you're really good to go. Maybe you don't want to learn how to write, in which case, you can accelerate your learning by a factor of 2 or 3, but it's harder to get really far w/o the characters, because few people will have a large vocabulary and be illiterate at the same time.
For now, I'd recommend getting a tutor. Esp. a hot one from the local university.
