  • London airports charges to increase!

Just seen this on the news in the UK about an increase in landing charges at the London airports.

The Civil Aviation Authority has granted BAA the right to increase airport charges by up to 23.4% from 1 April 2008

    This is from Yahoo News:-

LONDON (AFP) - British and Irish airlines joined forces Tuesday to attack a move allowing airports operator BAA to significantly increase landing charges for planes touching down at London's main airports.

Virgin Atlantic and low-cost peers easyJet, bmi and Dublin-based Ryanair issued a joint statement demanding an overhaul of airport regulation in Britain after the country's independent aviation regulator said it had granted BAA permission to hike current charges.
The airlines said customers would end up paying, via more expensive ticket prices, while they blasted the acquisition of BAA by Spanish construction group Ferrovial in 2006, which had left the airports operator "highly indebted."

The Civil Aviation Authority said the increase in revenue from planes landing at Heathrow and Gatwick would enable BAA to offer passengers "decently modern airports."

But British Airways said the CAA action was "to the detriment of customers."

BAA said it was "committed to transforming Britain's airports" but indicated that it expected the CAA to have imposed even higher landing charges.

The CAA said Tuesday that authorised BAA to impose a maximum landing charge on airlines of 12.80 pounds in 2008-2009 (April-March) for each passenger arriving at Heathrow. That represented a rise of 23.5 percent.

The aviation regulator added that BAA could further increase the landing charge by 7.5 percent above the rate of inflation in each of the following four years up until 2013.

"The CAA recognises that the resulting increases in airport charges are significant. However, these higher airport charges are essentially paying for the modernisation of Heathrow and Gatwick," the regulator said in a statement.

For Gatwick, BAA has been authorised to impose a maximum landing charge of 6.79 pounds per passenger in 2008-2009, an increase of 21 percent compared with the 2007-2008 price cap.

In the four subsequent years, BAA can further increase the cap by 2.0 percent above inflation.

The four airlines which issued a joint statement said that "BAA has demonstrated that it is expecting the travelling public to pick up the bill for Grupo Ferrovial's highly-leveraged" acquisition.

They added that "BAA's ability to cynically 'game' the system has been aided by an outdated regulatory regime and a regulator that is failing to fulfil its statutory duties."

We are going to get increased facilites for our money though .     Probably more over priced sales outlets if BAA follow their usual policy!

All I want is somewhere to sit down in terminal 3 at Heathrow and a reasonably priced meal. And we complain about Suvarnabhumi......

I would not be too quick to congratulate yourself KL.

Those nice people from the EU who lose yes lose 90 Billion Euros a year! (That is more than the GDP of most of the world's contries!) also want to regulate airport charges.

New EU airport charges rules could increase airfares

      UK Travel  Jan 14, 2008

According to an MEP, passengers using the airports of the UK may actually end up paying more for flights, in case the new European Union directive becomes a law.

Next week, the directive on airport charges comes before the European Parliament. The proposal is highly particular about ensuring transparency in the fees charged by the airports for the airlines for access to various services and facilities. According to the European Commission, the new rules are meant to create a level playing field that would increase competition and opportunities for airlines.

This would be a new addition to the charge apart from the one that many airlines are asking from their customers in the form of fuel surchages and other fee types. However, the implementation of the new law is not still done, and it could take some more time.

However, according to Martin Callahan, the Conservative MEP, the legislation was not at all necessary in the market place of Britain's that is greatly deregulated and highly competitive. He remarked that airports like Gatwick may face a massive increase in cost to comply with the new accounting procedures and the other rules laid down in the legislation.

He observed, "This is another example of the European Union trying to fix something that isn't broken. UK airports have done well to attract airlines and expand services. They've been able to do this because we have a lightly regulated and very competitive industry."
Note particularly the sentence I highlighted.  It's rare that I find myself agreeing with any politician from the EU

        Its Budget day tomorrow.

I bet that the Government increases Airport Passenger Duty using the excuse that it is a Green tax to help the environment.

So I guess Suvarnabhumi is not all that bad!

BA Flights to BKK will still leave from Terminal 4. As long as they don't move anymore flights to Africa there I'm happy. You don't know a slow line like a check in line sharing with a flight to Lagos. Every man and his dog wan't to bring all their worldly possessions with them. i don't think they let you on the flight if you have less than 8 bags to check in.
