Todays silly question, can you change the default (in this case Italian)
language on a pc?

Naang Faa, yes, it should be easy. Go into Control Panel, then choose "Regional and Language Options". You can change the keyboard language and the display languages. You might need the original Windows CD depending on what language you want to change to.

On my laptop there's a supplemental choice that says, "install files for complex languages and right to left languages (including Thai).  

There is also an option to install East Asian languages but that would not include Thai.

Do you want all the Windows commands in English as apposed to Italian? (Does the computer have an Italian version of Windows?)

If both answers are YES then the best thing to do is to go to Windows Update and install the English Language Pack by downloading it... that's if you can navigate through the Italian to get that far!

(It's possible you can do this by inserting the disc but I'm betting that this has long gone so the best way is to install it via a Windows update.)

yes all commands are Italian, she wants English..

there is no way on buddhas earth we could navigate in Italian
(though she's a right smart alec)

It willl have to be the update..

Ok, here we go. You may not need update - English might be in the files on the hard drive - but if not the CD or the update is the other option.

Once you've opened the Regional and Language Options (it will be in Italian, but will have same icon as the first screen shot attached).

Then open this to show Keyboards and Languages - screen shot 2.

Click on Install/uninstall languages - then she can choose to add English. It will prompt if she needs the Windows CD.

After installing English (and or Thai), she can change the keyboard and display languages by the following: click on "Keyboards and languages" and she will see screenshot 3. She can choose English as the default input language (after sucessfully adding it from the previous step). She can also add it as an input service so it can switch between English/Italian/Thai - just in the box below the Default Input Language.

She can also choose options for how the language bar will display on the desktop (screenshot 4)
