  • Windows 7 on a netbook?

A few months ago I bought an 'Acer Aspire One' so called 'netbook.'

Today I installed Windows 7 on it and assumed I would have to turn off all the 'Aero' features, etc. I was wrong. It's running just as fast as XP and maybe even quicker... especially surfing the net and web page rendering.

Well, I'll keep you up to date how it goes as it's still early days, but so far so good.

Macs are going to have to do some real thinking to keep up with this. They made a little headway during the Vista disaster, but Windows 7 is NOT Vista and it's not even close to XP either.

    I love my Windows 7!

Stogie.. I recently put Windows 7 RC onto my Aspire one replacing the Beta version via bootable USB, the Beta version loaded just as fast as XP but the Release candiate does take alot longer. Windows 7 is great though! did you get wifi to work? there is a trick to doing this as there is no win 7 drivers as yet for mostly everything but remember EVERYTHING you do on the beta and RC versions is being sent back to windows for research ect... beta expires on 1 August 09 and RC expires August 10 but there is a crack to get rid of the expiry for research purposes only.....

I did a lot of reading up on this before I took a chance on my little net book!

I had read about WiFi issues and also how to correct them.

The RC 7100 install went amazingly fast. I installed from USB external hard disk drive and was up and tinkering about within about 35 minutes.

WiFi worked first time and Windows 7 installed all the updates and new drivers I needed. First I got rid of that watermark saying that it was an 'evaluation copy' and then did all the critical and optional updates (not the language packs, though) and it's working very well.

Installed FireFox and pimped that up the way I like it and then the AVG Free Anti Virus program.

I'm gonna try the PC to PC streaming through Windows Live later...

Interesting - but he is testing an old version of 7 beta which is nothing like the 7 RC which is now being given away.

(And the reason I know this is from the date of his post.)

Any idea about the disk footprint? I am still using the original eeePC as my traveling computer but my guess is that Windws 7 would be too large for the small amount of flash RAM I have in this little guy.

Windows 7 won't run on the 7 inch Asus EEE PCs. Several reasons but screen resolution and the solid state hard drive are the main two.

The ISO file for Windows 7 is about 2.4 gigs...

My Aspire has a 160 GB Hard Disc Drive.

I have run the Windows assessment test and it scores pretty low, but it still feels like it's running faster than XP.

I'm beginning to think that I just had a crappy install of XP!

Working with 7 on my netbook IS faster.
