  • Windows 7... WOW!

I bought a new laptop recently for several reasons, principal amongst them was that I wanted to get something good enough to run Windows 7 Ultimate and all the extras!

All I can tell you is WOW!

If you are on XP now (like me) and you hated the thought of Vista (like me) then Windows 7 is a nice surprise.

First off, it installs in well under an hour... most of that is spent backing up your old operating system.

It's NOT XP so it doesn't look like XP... although it can run on 'pretend XP' if there is a program that needs it. So far all my programs have installed on the new system flawlessly and the only one that doesn't want to play nicely is that ancient game DX Ball... (remember that, lads?)

It'll take a day or two to get used to but it's a zillion times better than that horrible behemoth Vista and a lot more fun than XP!

Nothing wrong with Vista. You prefer 3.1 too?

Sadly they removed Guest Mode from 7 - that would have been the perfect porn surfing method. I have been using Sandboxie, but heard its not fully 7 ready.

Any suggestions for Porn Surfing and covering tracks on a Laptop with Windows 7??

I've got Vista and sucks big time (and not in a good way). After 2 years it still won't support my webcam on YM and most of my old games are now unplayable. Bill Gates kiss me

The only thing that stops me from switching to Windows 7 is Microsofts history of constantly releasing programs full of faults in the first year.

                      My thoughts entirely.

By the time they release SP1  the product will just about do what it was allegedly designed to do  -  I did say just about!

By the time they release SP2  the product will be just about worth paying money for  -  so long as you can get it at a discount.

If they were selling washing powder or cars  Microsoft would have gone out of business in their first year.

I sympathize and agree... but in this case I would say... give Microsoft the benefit of the doubt and treat yourself as soon as you can, on this occasion!

And it's not just me that's cheerleading for 7. Now the reviews are starting to come out and I have to say I haven't yet seen a really bad one and most are very enthusiastic.

The back up process is worth a few bob. It makes an image of your hard drive if something like HDD failure happens. And it works very well, too. There are some programs out there you can buy or even use for free but this is the best I've seen and it's a part of your Windows 7 purchase.

The disc defragmenter is crap. Uninteresting and extremely slow, so a third party app would work for that. (I use IObit Smart Defrag... It's free!)

The best thing so far is the new and much more useful task bar... I've included an image of mine.

The gadgets that you can add to your desk top include the usual things... news, clock, volume button, radio, CNN/BBC, but so far there aren't that many.

Google Desktop has a lot more gadgets and widgets you can install, but it's never been all that stable for me, even on XP.

One of the annoying things about Vista was that it asked you if you werre sure every time you clicked on something. It had crippling security restrictions which people like you and I did not need and just found frustrating.

In 7, not only are there a lot fewer annoying hand holding pop ups, the ones that do come around are easy to turn off to prevent from annoying you again in the future.

Another sparking feature is the installation of drivers from the internet. Now, of course, Vista had this (and actually so did XP) but on 7 it actually functions as it should.

In my view there should be two control panels. One for commonly used adjustments and one for more advanced users.

The new control center in 7 is really intimidating and it's very hard to find stuff.

Why is it that they insist on moving everything around. It's a service persons nightmare. Just adds to the TCO!
