  • VoIP in LOS

I am thinking about my future technical setup at home, and one option newer routers offer is VoIP ports.

Obviously that only makes sense if VoIP is going to work in LOS.

Does anyone use VoIP successfully in LOS?

Yes it works...assuming the internet works and you have the bandwidth.

Have been using it every day since I arrived in Thailand a week ago.

Quality has been sensational, alot better than some of my telephone calls.

      Cheers

Never had a problem whether hard-wired or wireless with Skype or Yahoo Messenger and both voice and web-cam simutaneously.

Certainly my VOIP experiences in Bangkok and Pattaya have been generally better than in Europe and the UK.

I€™ve been using SIP based VoIP from my Laptop softphone for the past 4 years while in LOS. Always worked great €¦ I can bring my home phone number with me€¦ way cool calling people up from LOS and they think I€™m still at home. No long distance charges at all, I can even receive calls too.  €¦ it€™ll save you tons of money too€¦ years ago I check out of the Marriott I had an $800 phone bill from using the hotels rip-off room phone €¦ Thank God for VoIP€¦ and now that Internet is free in most hotels there's no cost at all.

I have an experimental SIP servers setup in my Datacenter. I can make calls from Canada to Thai cell phones for as little as 2 cents a minute over an economical route or 4 cents a minute over a premium route. So VoIP can save you money in more then one way. You can setup your own custom dialing plans on your switch ... I got 01166 = economical route  & 04466 = premium route. Premium is cristal clear... it's as if they are next door! Calling Thai cell phone costs the person on the cell phone nothing to receive your call.

I have the same experience as the guys above, as long as the bandwidth is ok VoIP works very well. In the past I've had phone bills up to $1000 during my holidays and now it is close to nothing.

This even way cooler than most would think...

                  - Yes darling, I'm at home. How is your family, in *insert adequate remote country here*?
really a bummer that I couldn't come with you this time...

I was standing against the Nana Hotel car park wall opposite NEP entrance last night using Skype on my iPhone picking up someone's unsecured wi-fi signal. Worked perfectly, managed to get lots of work done. Much preferred it to sitting in my office as I was constantly offerred beer, massages etc
