Casio Exilim EX-Z1200. Takes pictures with 12,1 Megapix, is small, has a big screen and is good for everything from snapshot to semi-professional photography (not that I know much of the least).
You can take hundreds of photos our hours of video before recharging. Connects easily to your notebook.
I recently acquired a Canon IXUS 850 SD (UK) 800 SD (US).
It's not that light or that slim but takes very good shots in poor light without flash. It has image stabilisation to reduce camera shake which works very well when you are snapping in a hurry!
It is discontinued but you can still pick them and at a big discount.

While a lot of the discussion is about digital SLR, there is also discussion of the point and shoots. Check the links posted to the review sites and don't fall for the higher megapixels the better, especially for the point and shoot cameras.
Simon - you're such a doyle. I assume you want something very light-weight, easy to use, and good features. Well, it has to be easy to use if you will be operating it haha. Anyways, I would go with the Casio Exilim too. I got one a few months back and I think its a great camera - not very expensive, quite small, and very good quality pics.
I'm a rough-ridin', hootin' and hollerin', ladyboy lovin' cowboy! Bang bang yer dead!!!
Fuck all those MegaPixels ! What are you going to do with them, make a God Damn Wall Poster ?
Bullshit, 5megaPixels is fine for 8" X 10"s wall hangings.
You can pick up a Pentax with 8megaPixels for $79.99 and don't play into this Digital Zoom shit, shop Optical Zoom.
I have four cameras and it it my opinion; Canon & Olympus make the best " Affordable " cameras around. Are they absoulute besy ? Maybe not, but bang for the Buck, " Yes. " They are the two best brand names.
I got my wife a Pentax 8megaPixels about the size of playing card. " Queen of Diamonds " for $79 and it takes great pics.
weighs about 3 ounces, fits easily in any pocket, has 10 Megapixels, etc..... works great, easy to use and great quality pics too
Taking it to Bolivia and Peru soon, if I thought I needed one better I would certainly buy one; but fact is this 239.99US camera is just what I want/need for a long trip where space and weight is at a premium.
sure did, to me Nikon still makes the best camera's in the world and always have
this says it's 4.6 OZ, maybe 5 total with memory card and battery
I have had a D-100 and 2 D-70's now, as well as 2 of these Coolpix all since 2002 and they are just fantastic
* memory cards are funny...... I used to pay 100 bucks for a 512 MB, which was all they made at the time; I remember all photographers being thrilled when they actuallly made a 1 Gig! Now, well I picked up TWO 2-gig cards when I bought the camera; only 45 bucks total for 4 gigs!
In an ever-more expensive world, isn't it great how technology just keeps going down and down?
