  • Laptop Problem!

    Hey tech-gurus!

My laptop is behaving all weird!

When i try to open C/D drive, it asks me to select which program to open with? And, on the list of programs, Windows Explorer is not there!!!

Can anyone please help this fool out, please!

    Cheers!

Sounds like you may have a virus infection. When was the last time you updated your antivirus definitions?

If you are using Windows XP? - try starting it up in the safe mode. When the computer is starting, press "F8" just before Windows starts. This should bring up a menu choice of how you want Windows to start up. Choose "safe mode". It will look a little strange as the regular video driver isn't loaded. Then try to run a virus scan with your antivirus program.

If that doesn't work, try downloading this antivirus program - Free-AV. Free-Av Uninstall your old one before installing this one. There are also virus removal tools on the site if you want to try using those first.

      Good luck!

If explorer isn't there how are you viewing the list?

        Something isn't quite right somewhere.

If you can see the task bar then explorer should be there.

Press 'start -> Run' then type 'explorer.exe' (without quotes) and it should fire up or alternatively: press 'ctrl + alt + del' click 'File' -> 'New Task (Run..)' and type 'exploer.exe'

No idea what caused it, what you did/didn't do, etc etc

Might be corrupt registry, or something else. Is everything up to date and nothing there that shouldn't be (virus/adware/spyware)?

You could always try to repair it...

His problem is very simple. There aren't 2 problems, just one.

What he's talking about is that when you open the CD, Windows tries to determine the appropriate program. If it's audio or video, it will encourage Media Player, though it may also show RealPlayer, iTunes, or other software if you have it. If there are just lots of photos, it'll try to suggest various image viewing programs.

What he's looking for is to open the drive with Windows Explorer.

I don't know if this is commonly in the set of choices. I never use the CD auto-detect functionality - I usually have it disabled. If you disable it, you can still get to the CD using Windows Explorer via the usual means of loading explorer. I have it moved from "Accessories" to the Start Menu - just drag it over.

                oh FFS...

                CD drive not C/D drives

blindingly obvious now you pointed it out, I thought he was having problems viewing hard drives.

with partions and CD/DVD drives I have A/C/D/E/F/G which is where my head was at...

Really? I was the only one who didn't get it? Then what the hell did work?

If it is the HD, just run "Explorer" from the "Run" option in the Start Menu. If that doesn't work, your HD file allocation table may be hosed. Go back to a previous restore point, unless it's too important to retrieve recent stuff, in which case you should go to a specialist. Otherwise, reformatting is a fine option.
