    • (rxpharm @ Aug. 18 2008,12:40) Here is a photo I took in low light without a tripod, showing the benefits of antishake with my Minolta 5D. This is a photo of one of the major roads here taken at night, handheld no tripod, 1/2 second exposure at F5.6, 30 mm (with an 18-70 zoom) - I never could have gotten this kind of photo with my film SLR without a tripod.
I just saw the "package" SONY ALPHA 350 + 18-70 + 55-200 and standard accessories at USD 805 here in Hong Kong. It does seem as a good deal compared to what I see in internet for the same at about USD 1,099
The camera it's handy and not too heavy. So, for sure it's something to be considered. Forget about the ZEISS lenses for time being..quite pricey and heavy!

I fancy wide angles quite a bit in fact. However, to get a real good wide-angle effect with DSRL seems must go on zooms like the 10-20 Sigma which is quite expensive but seems almost the only one available.
Do only what you think it's good for you, and not what others think should be good for you!

        • Nikon D80 + 18-135 DX lens has dropped in price here in Singapore to S$1300, so it is now cheaper than it is on most US discount websites. One dealer willing body alpone at S$950.

End result for me is got me a used D50 plus a 18-70 DX and 70-300 ED Nikkor lenses plus a whole bunch of other stuff to start me off. I'll play with the D50 for a while and when I upgrade, I can continue to use the lenses. Plus side of the D50 over Nikons current budget models, is that I can still use my older Nikkors.

Stupid choice ? We'll see. I was so tempted by the Olympus E-510 with 14-32 and 42-200 lenses at around US$550, but in end decided to stick with Nikon.

          • Looker, that's a pretty reasonable price and confirms what I thought that HK is cheaper than the US.. I brought my 5D in HK.

As regards wide angle, now we are in the computer/digital age of photography don't forget you can take panoramas and stitch into a "wide angle" panoramic view. What in particular do you want an ultra wide view for?. A stitched panorama has far more detail than a single wide angle will ever have.

            Take a look at
            http://www.photoclubalpha.com & dyxum.com for some more Sony/Minolta stuff
            http://www.photoclubalpha.com/2008/0...lpha-kit-lens/
If I recall correct David Killpatrick (a person you can trust) did a review on the 300 & 350, and leaned more to the 300 being better value?? Also take a look at http://friedmanarchives.com/newslett...1-08/index.htm

Next time your out looking can you find a price for the Alpha700 kit?

            • Sure, will look at Alpha 700..just next to the 350
My idea of use for the wide angle is not really for lanscapes but for pictures like the one I enclose.

That seems also a bit cheaper than HK too, but haven't checked around a lot. Just checked SONy.

                • D200 is widely quoted here at S$2800-2999 in the main line shops, but a trip to the local shops at Funan for example will let you get it now for S$2000. So also now not overpriced compared to the US.

Seems a direct competitor of the EOS40D, if I'm not wrong.

Anyway, you bought it already, did you? And whcih lenses with it?

                          So, shoot away
