I remember those shots. Before I used to sneer at this poverty and look down at all Asians because I grew up in a rich America. These shots show how poor these people can improvise and make you with wood slats spaced far apart. If I moved to Isaan with my spoiled American know-it-all I probably would have cried. Seeing how they live with little money and still be happy is eye-popping. Isaan is indeed a Heaven on Earth despite their neediness. I think you had fun with the right attitude about traveling. Accept them for what they are because that's what Thailand is all about. More power to the people of Thailand. I love Thailand.

They live there grow rice which they eat for free. Free chicken and beef. Most people don't raise pigs though.
When the rice paddies are full the fish swim right up to their house.
Free bananas and mangos all over the place. It does not cost much to live out there.
It never hurts to get some poor sod to pay for a new house..,...

Not sure if I can find the village now but I have some clues.
I rented a car and drove out there many times.
Need to get someone to translate the sign.

I am often asked if I would recommend traveling to Thailand independently, or if it is better as part of a group. Well, the answer is, it depends a lot on you. Thailand is a wonderful country and it is easy to travel alone, with your partner or travel companion.
The country is very used to receiving visitors from all over the world, and many Thais, especially those working in the tourism industry, speak English well.
In my opinion, the organized tours are restrictive and not flexible enough to explore the real Thailand. Some are quite pricey as well, although Thailand is a wonderful and affordable country for all age groups, from backpackers to retirees.
I only recommend joining an organized tour if you're feeling particularly nervous about traveling alone, or if it's a custom tour that focuses on a specific topic, such as scuba diving or foodie adventures, where you'll only discover the best places with a knowledgeable local guide.
