  • Is it possible to find a good job in Thailand?

First, I've never been. I'm planning a vacation for early next year. Three weeks. I've been an active participant dating transgendered women in the US for nine years. I've actually had a three year relationship with a beautiful Vietnamese girl. So, the question is, Can a man relocate to Thailand and find good work (I work in the finance industry)?

What is "good work?" Work you enjoy or work that pays shit loads of money?

Some companies have offices here (including banks) so you may be in a situation to be relocated here. You can always work for yourself as Thailand is very much the 'land of opportunity' at the moment! You can teach English at various level from kids to corporate and this pays eather badly or reasonably depending on how well you understand the teaching industry.

ThaiVisa.com is probably better equipped to answer your question!

If you are smart you can live comfortably here on very little. I've been doing it for years. In fact the more you earn the more you spend so you don't NEED a lot of money to live in Thailand but it sure helps if you have it!

I have been living in the same house for four years and the rent is less than $100 a month! But you can find a swanky place closer to the action for western prices. My friend pays almost $3,000 for his gaff on Soi 4 and another blokey I know pays 1,000 bucks and yet another pays just $600 a month for rent!

So there are places for all people! Western food is Western priced so living isn't cheap, but if you like Thai food you can love on about a dollar a day! If you like to cook then you're in luck. Raw ingredients (veg/meats etc) are very cheap.

Transport is very cheap also so getting about won't cost you an arm and a leg. Some say that the further away from Bangkok you get the cheaper it is to live... Well - true and not true... The rent may be cheaper in Pattaya but the public transport is mafia owned and a lot more expensive... (and you can't get a cheap aircon cab like you can in The Big Mango!)

In Hua Hin you can rent a nice house for about 600 bucks but it's miles from anywhere!

    Anyway - Good luck...

      Hi Stogie,

Hope you don't mind if I ask you a question about teaching English in Thailand. I was curious to know if you'd had much experience in teaching before you moved to Thailand? I wasn't sure if you were a full time teacher before this, I imagine it would help to have some experience. I have checked out ajarn.com and some of the other sites but just wanted to ask someone whose done it.
I am trying to sort out my employment options after I sell my business and have been looking at teaching. The TESOL courses are fairly expensive in Australia, one UNI wants $3,000 for a 20 week course.
I don't get it, is this a magic show?

I taught English in Thailand off and on over the past 20 years. The TESOL might open a few doors for you if you have no experience. I have taught and administered ESL schools in Thailand and the USA so I have an understanding of the job and what it takes to get a good paying gig. The other question is how serious are you really going to be, because teaching ESL is not so easy. It is like being a stand up comedian hour after hour. The students are often under-movtivated and the job gets to be a grind. My best experiences were private lessons to rich kids, whom I liked. Large classes are the worst unless the students are very interested in learning. The pay is probably between about 6-15 bucks an hour to start in schools. The pay is usually higher for private classes. One has to gauge the other expenses too, like time and travel to job site. The good part is that there are always jobs available, especially since 9/11 when the US cut back on student visas and many students had to stay in country.

I had no experience and qualifications and within a few months I was workingfull time (12 hours a week) for a multinational... (illegally of course, as most teachers do!)

You don't need paperwork or experience as Thailand doesn't take education very seriously. Just show up to an interview looking smart and the job is yours. I know Swedish people who lie and pretend they're English. I know a French guy in the south who does the same!

Ajarn.com is an excellent resource and can answer all your questions about Teaching English in Thailand.

the best way is to get a job in a company that has a branch in thailand, or else you would be very lucky to earn close to what you are used to from the west.
of course you dont spend as much money on hookers and drugs while working, but nevertheless i think most farangs will have a problem living on a salary equal or less than 50k/month.
if i was a looser in farangland and was a native english speaker, teaching english would definately be an alternativ. but for you, go from finance to teaching, i think you would get bored very quick, even with all the ladyboys to date(or do you mean fuck?)

..here is a link i picked up from another post related to a similar question; couldn't believe what tuition costs were for one college, $14K a year in BJKK!?? ..then look at membership costs for one of their 'exclusive'  golf clubs, $25k yearly!??  Who the hell is getting rich off those prices!??

              ..average salary costs by position
..average costs of living in Bangkok

(stogie bear @ Jul. 23 2006,14:56) I have been living in the same house for four years and the rent is less than $100 a month!
One ladyboy I know has a room for 1200 (baht) a month half a block from the beach in Jomtien. She splits the rent with a a Thai lady so they each pay 600.

Now this place is not acceptable for most farangs with the shitty shared squat toilet and shower but I'm amazed that such a prime location is not yet developed.

Just spoke to massage girl tonight in Bali, she pays 35 bucks a month for a room in Kuta.

An unusual opportunity. There's a one in nine chance you'll get assigned to Bangkok and rent is free.

DEADLINE IS AUGUST 4th which includes an essay.
