The cabaret "angle" is often overlooked when it comes to ladyboy hunting, although personally, I think it's worth considering.

As well as the big theatre style productions, there are a number of places that have smaller groups performing.

Particularly outside Bangkok, in places like Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai, and even Phuket, they are worth checking out. In a city like Chiang Mai, Simon Cabaret is basically the best option you have for quality LB's.

Pattaya has a nice assortment of cabaret venues as well.
