Nobby , I used to travel to Thailand with a close knit group of friends , we spent the day together at the beach , had a few drinks at night , then I went off to grab a "girl " for the night
My mates stayed out drinking all night and the odd time took  home a bargirl .
I was even rumbled in Phuket with a stunning post op who I introduced to my friends only for a bar girl to tell them the truth after Id left .
The next day at the beach I took some banter , but we were all relaxed about it , we all had a laugh , as Ive said they are good guys .
Recently our little merry band of travellers has expanded , I dont wanna spend my holiday sneeking around , because a few of the newcomers are just not the good friends like before , so last holiday I decided to go it alone , and had an even better time .
As people have said get out and meet some BMs in the LB bars , the first thing that will strike you is how normal and dare I say it - nice guys , these people are (well most of them   )
It is also refreshing and genuinely interesting to talk about a common interest that you ,ve probably never spoke to anyone about before .
It is certainly a breath of fresh air compared to some of the idiots we encounter in the "normal " bars of Pattaya whos only ambition is how loud , vulgar and drunk they  can be .

In the end no matter what you choose wether it comes to your mates or girls , remember its your holiday and do what you wanna do .... you,ll have a great time

if i was you...i would make up an excuse and say i couldnt go at the same time as your friends...

why do you need people around that only will limit your happines...
go by yourself...trust me..iwe done it the last 3 times...and has never regret it..

now i will never go with anyone not interested in LB`s again....

and afraid about beeing alone.....?? no way ...iwe meet a lot of wonderfull boardmembers,barowners,and ofcourse ladyboys.....and i have "partys of my life..."

so now a days when my "normal" friends starts talking about they wants to go with me to LOS...i just say iam not sure when i will go....and only 14 days before...i tell them i got suddenly offer to go NOW...

but ruin my holiday and my hardearned money to "satisfy" their norm...no fucking way... my lifes to short for that...

Made the mistake of inviting a couple of guys I know to come to Thailand and LBs never got involved, they just were not good travelers, whining about something most of the time.

None of my mates back home know and I will keep it that way. LOS is fantasy for me and prefer to travel alone although if need be plenty of places especially Pattaya for action on the sly if with a mate.

Although they are asking questions as to why after going twice in the last year I have 3 trips booked in for the next 12 months.

They think I have fallen for a girl.

Little do they know.

A great question from a newbie and virgin traveller to Thailand, jimslim's post is excellent information.

Stogie Bear can be an arse sometimes to newbies, he writes first, then thinks later and then updates in an improved manner. I may not yet live in Thailand (that happens in August 2008 - Business Visa sorted), neither am I an expert, but I have made many mistakes and I am more experienced and wiser for it.

For a first time traveller you need to have friends with you who you know and trust and can watch each others backs. I presume they are long term friends, you each need to look out for each other as the first experience on Thai soil can have an adverse effect on your pschye.

You are travelling with 2 friends. By the end of the holiday you will know if they are true friends or not. They will not give a shite what get up to if they are real mates. What happens in Thailand should stay in Thailand.

For a first trip I would recommend a few nights in Bangkok, stay at either Dynasty Inn Soi 4 Sukhumvit or Soi 6 Sukhumvit, each are reasonably priced and extremely good standard of accommodation and very LB friendly. They are both within spitting distance of NEP (Soi 4).

Then I would suggest a longer duration in Phuket. I have just returned from Thailand and spent 10 days in Patong. It is spotlessly clean, very safe and has an abundance of great beaches, golf courses etc etc. Plus there are various places open 24 hours and the LB's are of a similar high quality to BKK. Granted, Phuket is more experience than anywhere else in Thailand, but that is because it is a prosperous province.

All things relative, your own currency will go a long way. I budget £1500/$3000 for a 2 week trip (including flights), I stay in 4 star hotels, I eat well and I am never short of nocturnal company.

P.S. - Regards forward planning, the only things you need to do is book your return flight, initial accommodation in BKK, holiday insurance and have various means to access funds. Everything else can be done when you are there.

I will do a trip report within a week which will include an extensive list of local professional contacts that can be trusted to there job cheaper than most internet sites.
