  • Safety do's and dont's BKK

Having read lots of the stellar info on this board, I am thinking to stay in BKK for a few days prior to travelling to Pattaya. Want to walk about the Nana Plaza / Guess bar area. Sounds fantastic. Thinking of staying at the Dream hotel.

Only thing holding me back is that I am a bit skeptical / hesitant being in such a large 'unkown' city by myself... anything I should be worried about, or specifically any safety do's and dont's I need to bear in mind?

Mind you, I am relatively well travelled, yet have never travelled for pleasure alone, nor have I been to Asia. Hence, any safety pointers from the veterans on this board will be greatly appreciated.

Be wary of ALL electrical fittings.

When crossing the street look left, right, up, down and behind then look again and keep on looking.

Don't stand on the rear step of the Baht Bus (maybe it'll fall off, maybe a drunk will drive into it, maybe you'll lose your grip)

Don't rent a 'motorcyke' and ride it drunk, nor ride pillion with someone who is.

Don't swim near the waste treatment outlet on Pattaya beach.

      Do have fun!

Don´t take a freelancer outside Nep. Stick to the bargirls. And on´t EVER take a freelancer off of BeachRd. in Pattaya.

If you come from/or have travel experience in any big city, which Bangkok certainly is, just use the same precautions which served you in the past, walk past/around the beggars, avoid the "students" looking to have you fill out the tourist info forms, dont wear a lot of jewelry, or carry a wallet, only bring the money you think you're gonna need for the night, all cc's and passport in hotel safe, the lower Suk is relatively safe, particularly travelling from Nana to Guess, (Never argue or lose your temper with the natives), enjoy, you'll have a great time. And pay attention to the above advice, and at Guess ask Gong, the bartender if any other board members are around. Good Luck .
Life is short. Live it well.

I feel safer going around BKK than my home city here in UK. Never had any problems on my travels in LOS. Just remember you are farang!

Watch out for anyone too friendly, anyone trying to sell you a suit or gems, or take you to their favorite seafood restaurant (especially if its on soi 24 or 26).

Never eat street food until you see a Thai order something from the place.

Make sure a cab turns on the meter, if he refuses then exit and get another cab. Cabs parked in front of hotels, night markets, etc... do this all the time. Better to hail a moving cab.

There is no 400 Baht fixed price taxi from airport. Its meter+50 Baht.

DO NOT THINK YOU HAVE RIGHT-OF-WAY WHEN CROSSING THE STREET

Watch out for people who decide the top the escalator is good place to stop for a chat

If You see a movie be prepared to be freezing (and stand for the king ALWAYS)

Watch out for anyone getting physically close to you, there are some excellent pickpockets late at night. If some girls starts coming over to give you a kiss or grope, hold her hands in yours so you can always see them.

Always carry a silver cross, a wooden stake and piece of Kryptonite - you never know who you'll meet

Everything at the Patpong night market can be found at MBK at 25%

Wear Yellow on Monday, unless you are going to Government House.

All that being said, Bangkok is actually one of the safest cities in the world (except for driving).

That is by far the most important of the two rules.

If you take a non-bar working LB back to your room under no circumstances accept a drink that she pours for you. Do not go to the toilet and leave a drink in the bedroom. Some of these skanks will drop a mickey finn into your drink and that's she she wrote for you. When you are out and about divide your money between two pockets to be on the safe side. Never flash a hugh wad of Baht notes in a bar, a restaurant or shopping in the streets at night. I would take no more than 4000 Baht if I planned on a long night and I would bring along my ATM card should the need for extra cash arise. Using good common sense no matter where you are will get you by with little or no problems.

Snick eluded to it, but the cause of the most fights I have witnessed have stemmed from a negative action relating to the King. I have seen 3 fights kick off purely because a drunken farang threw money for a GG/LB straight onto the floor. Somehow that seems to set alarm bells rining with the local Thai Thugs just itching for a ten on one fight. Reason for this outburst? Image of the king being disprespected and DONT expect any support from the police if they get wind that you have done it - they will basically say, hmmm you deserved it and lucky we are not taking it any further.

I cannot emphasise how seriously this is viewed by Thais. Apparently throwing money onto a table is just about acceptable but onto the floor adjacent to your feet is a huge no no.

                          Cheers

I can , I ate them constantly for breakfast , lunch and dinner for three and a half weeks , I now find farang bumholes boring and tastless unless covered in chillis

Yes. Be very very respectful of the King and royal family. This does not extend to politicians who are held in contempt...but until you know the score stay away from politics too.

The king's picture is also on coins, so if you drop a coin do not stomp on it with your foot to stop it from rolling around
