The Patriots just got homered so bad by typical fucked up officiating. These idiots are well paid enough that getting influenced by the home crowds is inexcusable. Sure Belicheck fucked up by going for it on 4th and 2 but before that on 3rd and 2 the colts had 2 players blatantly in the neutral zone...........not called. The PI called on NE on the second to last colt TD was so bogus there should be an investigation. It is just fucking sad that officiating and pisspoor calls have so much of an effect on games. Then that spot was such a crock it is fucking sasd not to mention the defender facemasked Welker

Not withstanding that going for it on 4th and 2 on their own 28 was a pretty ignorant move on BB's part but if that lame PI had not of been called they may not have been in that position.

There I vented. I know one thing now that Saint peyton can't win on his own and TB most definitely showed he still is the best QB in the league.

I did not see the game. And I'm not sure how many timeouts were left.

But I think teams punt too often with a couple of minutes left. With 2:08 left and no Indy time outs if NE had made the first down NE could have run out the clock.

And don't forget things can go wrong with a punt and also Peyton can still score if they get the ball let's say on their own 30.

Easy to second guess Coach Bill but IMO a good call that just didn't work out.

BTW, as far as teams getting calls their way at home, the Phins were the home team in that game and still got reamed. The following play was ruled a Saints TD and not overturned on instant replay. It does not get any worse than that. The official in the photo is right on top of it and still can't see the ball is loose well before crossing the goal line. He should have his balls chopped off and shoved up his ass.

Brady is just fortunate to be in the current version of the NFL. If he had come in about the same time as Bradshaw, he wouldn't have survived long. If Joe Turkey Jones did to Brady what he did to Bradshaw, i.e. picking him up and pile driving him head first into the turf, Tommy would have went crying home to mommy.

just because they've got a hall of fame quarterback (wasn't favre inducted the same year as marino?) and the greatest running back since walter payton (if not jim brown), that doesn't mean they're the best team.
although when i think about the colts running game and the pats defense (neither of which seem to exist) and the bengals consistency (ditto) and the saints penchant for forgetting they're in a game at all...
hell, maybe you're right.
if favre can manage not to fall and break a hip (a major problem among the elderly), you just might be right...
although if LT shocks the world by returning to form in the play-offs, old P Rivers could take the chargers right to the....
well, right to the short end of a play-off game against the colts anyway.

Here's a well written analysis of my thinking on this subject:

While the criticism has been near unanimous, it's been based mostly on some axiom that the better percentage move was to punt it away. Meanwhile, actual statistical probability formulas say the opposite. An overwhelming number say Belichick played the odds correctly. At worst, there's AccuScore, which says the win probability was about even regardless.

Consider Brian Burke of AdvancedNFLStats.com. As Burke wrote for the New York Times:

"With 2:08 left and the Colts with only one timeout, a successful 4th-and-2 conversion wins the game for all practical purposes. A conversion on 4th-and-2 would be successful 60 percent of the time. Historically, in a situation with 2:00 left and needing a TD to either win or tie, teams get the TD 53 percent of the time from that field position. The total win probability for the 4th-down conversion attempt would therefore be:

"(0.60 * 1) + (0.40 * (1-0.53)) = 0.79 WP (WP stands for win probability)

"A punt from the 28 typically nets 38 yards, starting the Colts at their 34. Teams historically get the TD 30 percent of the time in that situation. So the punt gives the Pats about a 0.70 WP."

You don't need to know much math to know 79 percent is a greater likely win percentage than 70 percent.

Personally, I'm not completely convinced of probability conversions when it comes to a game with as many variables as football. The Colts defense is not the average defense. This isn't playing against St. Louis in the second quarter. Crowd noise matters. And so on.

Then again, Peyton Manning(notes) isn't the average quarterback €“ either at his own 30 or the Patriots' 30. Of course, neither is a pass from Tom Brady(notes) to Kevin Faulk, two clutch, veteran players.

Still, it ought to count for something that all of the probability formulas go in Belichick's favor. The majority of people issuing blistering attacks can cite the assumed probability that punting was the best option. That can't be deemed more accurate than actual probability even if you don't believe fully in the math.

There are few things worse in sports than when conventional wisdom of how something should be done (because that's how it's always been done) sends a chilling effect for innovation and ingenuity.

There are few black-and-white decisions in the course of a football game. One may be better than the other, but it's never 100 percent to zero percent. Belichick didn't make a good choice or a bad choice, he made his own choice.
