  • (seamus @ Jul. 30 2009,17:32) A question, why would you support a team you have or will never live anywhere near ?

To no one in general, just to those who support teams they have no connection with !
It is a question those jealous of the Manchester United success and their huge national and world wide following seem to get satisfaction by asking

I suppose it has a lot to do with who the fasionable teams happened to be when we were at an impressionable age Seamus!
For me it was 1970€™ish when that ageing 1968, first English European cup winning team featuring George Best, Bobby Charlton & Denis Law were seldom off the back page. Of course with Best, a lot of the time it was the front page for the wrong reasons
And Nanng Faa, it was a long time without too much glory; don€™t forget United were starved of success as English champions for 26 years from 1967-93, while Man City, Leeds, Liverpool, Derby County, Nottingham Forest, Everton & Aston Villa had their say

    • Had a Family in my Pub from Worcester tonight attending a Wedding tomorrow here in Stockport

One of them asked me for a Drink after I had rang "last orders" 10 minutes previous

But seeing as he was wearing the new Man United shirt I told him I would do because I was a "Red" too

He did tell me he was slightly worried about wearing it because he thought Stockport was full of City fans

Not in this Pub mate its 95% United

You know I am KL, but lived on the edge of East London from a very young age, remember feck all about living in Ireland. West Ham Local side, never any chance of winning feck all, but played good football & it aint all about winners. If that was the case, shouldnt people of a certain age support West Ham , as We won the world cup in 1966
        Be lucky,have fun & stay young !

        • I don't have any figures but I get the impression that West Ham once enjoyed a lot more national support than they do now These days they seem to be largely a selling club with just local community (East London & Essex) following.
Of course Man Utd have been incredibly fortunate in so far as their resurrection under Fergie coincided with the formation of the Premier League and the incredibly successful world wide marketing of the competition under Sky Sports & it's media partners.

          • Christ that old pathetic argument. I've been travelling and living in different parts of the world for 25 years so my football teams must change as often as I change my drawers... come on Al Wasl!

The last person to bring that subject up to me was a Liverpool fan. From Iraq. Living in Dubai.

I'm just off to tell my best mate who is from Edinburgh that he is not allowed to be a Norwich City supporter - a club he has followed since he was a teenager. He's even great mates with former players and the current manager. He'll be upset but, hey, I don't make the lame rules...

There are some right spoilsports out there.

              • Ah shit. You're the first to let me know Naang.

I may be a Scot, but SBR was a great man and arguably the best manager of the great unwashed in the past 40 years. He looked a shadow of himself at SJR last week.

                RIP Sir Bob

                        • They should have taken the opportunity to rename one of the stands after the great man - to have done it while he was there... wouldn't have been a dry eye in the house.
