Joe Cummings was one of Lonely Planet’s first authors, creating the original Lonely Planet Thailand guide in the early 1980s. As the famous travel brand begins shuttering its offices, Cummings looks back on his early days as a Southeast Asia guidebook writer.
The guy probably found it easier to let Internet distribute information. I actually still don't know how they make money with Internet. More amazing is that many books are still for sale in Amazon. The guy will probably make enough money for his retirement.
We have a domestic book equivalent to the Lonely Planet. The LP started with "hippies' routes" while ours started with cheap destination in the country. It's not as good as the LP, maybe not worse either, but the business is still publishing many books.
