I posted this after reading the BKK post and almost choked on my Earl Grey when i read that this is still going on. The Editorial in the BKK P was pretty scathing about the whole thing and states that Thailand has appeard weak and powerless ( which it is off course unlike the big superpowers that could reduce Somalia to a Parking lot if required)

Not only are these Pirates operating just off the coast but have now expanded to thoudands of miles outisde their own waters.

Americans will remember "Black Hawk Down", and Clinton sending of cruise missile(s) into a factory that made baby food milk powder & another into a factory that made cheap eye implants (or not if your memory and knowledge of world events is short).  PLUNDERING of fish that was the lifeline of LARGE numbers of small fishers by HUGE foreign factory ships.  NOT to mention chemical dumping by Europeans and others.

Does the USA allow Korean/Japanese seine/longliners to plunder the fish stocks along the USA mainland?   Thought not!!

Lets face it, these guys will go out of their way just to have a pop at America/The West. Its in their DNA. The reason Africa (and Somalia) are so fucked up is, LARGELY, down to Africans (Somalis) themselves. Its kind of like Haiti. Africans in power don't care what happens to their citizens. Well they care enough to make impassioned pleas to the West to send money to save them every time there is a natural disaster. This is then expropriated to their Swiss bank account & used to fund their extravagant lifestyles.

The obscenity of Mugabe owning one of Scotland's stateliest castles plus other luxury estates while the average Zimbabwean starves & all the British government does is wring their hands while demonstrating their complete impotence.

The Somalian pirates are not freedom fighters trying to right the wrongs of the past. They are lawless criminals who are further emboldened every time they get their outrageous demands met by weak, acquiescent governments. Their actions have nothing to do with anyone meddling in Somalia's affairs. They aren't marauding the seas in a desperate attempt to put food on the table, they have tumbled onto a great way to enrich themselves beyond anything they ever dreamt of & they will never stop what they are doing until an International force stops them.

Slowly governments are waking up to the fact that these African dictators have been taking them for a ride ever since the media started reporting upon the 1000's dying from famine & other disasters.

I saw a report from Haiti (another African population) where they were complaining they had only received a tiny amount of the 15 billion (approx) they had been promised to rebuild the country. Why should anyone donate money that only funds another despot's lifestyle? Wyclef Jean wasn't as silly as some thought.
